About the role

The Shelter Medicine Veterinarian is a licensed veterinarian responsible for providing veterinary care to the animals in the shelter for placement. The role may also include performing services at the Martin Clinic and in community environments such as spay/neuter and other soft tissue surgeries.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all work in accordance with SPCA of Texas protocol.
  • Provide veterinary services and surgeries on scheduled days, including spay/neuter and other soft tissue surgeries.
  • Oversee all aspects of veterinary care during the shift, including urgent care, restraint, treatment, and medically necessary euthanasia.
  • Provide a compassionate environment for animals and team members.
  • Engage with volunteers to support and improve the volunteer program.
  • Act as an ambassador for the SPCA of Texas, sharing the organization’s work and mission.
  • Participate in community vaccine clinics as agreed to in the employment offer.
  • Develop professional relationships with local veterinarians to promote the SPCA of Texas and its mission.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent.
  • Current Texas State Veterinary License and DEA license or the ability to obtain both before the start of employment.
  • Proof of and maintenance of personal liability insurance.

Skills

  • Surgical skills including spay/neuter and other soft tissue procedures; additional surgical skills are desirable.
  • Ability to perform physical examinations, diagnostic/medical procedures, and surgery while minimizing patient stress and discomfort.
  • Strong judgment and decision-making skills to assess relative costs and benefits of potential actions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to convey information clearly to others.
  • Ability to work effectively under stressful conditions in a high-volume, fast-paced clinic and shelter environment.
  • Capacity to process information rapidly and accurately.
  • Static strength to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 40 pounds.

This position is stationed at the SPCA of Texas, Dallas Animal Care Center. The shift may include weekend and evening hours. This is a full-time role.
