Summary

The Shelter Kitchen Worker Lead is a high-performing kitchen worker responsible for leading lower-level kitchen staff in the production, execution, and service of meals. They ensure proper handling and storage of food, maintain kitchen and dining room cleanliness, and monitor staff sanitation and hygiene. They work closely with the Kitchen Manager to manage supplies and assist with training and supervision of kitchen employees. They may act as the acting Kitchen Manager when needed.

Essential Job Duties

  • Prepare menu items under the direction of the Kitchen Manager.
  • Serve meals to residents and/or guests.
  • Properly handle and store food.
  • Ensure proper sanitation and hygiene.
  • Wash dishes from meal preparation.
  • Set up dishes for meals.
  • Clean the kitchen and dining room.
  • Accurately maintain records related to food safety.
  • Alert management to problems.
  • Inform the Kitchen Manager about the need for food and supplies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Serve as the acting Kitchen Manager when assigned or required.

Essential Duties of Teamwork and Collaboration

  • Collaborate with program and all other agency staff to foster a team environment.
  • Demonstrate and model effective communication skills in building relationships with clients and employees.
  • Create good working relationships with other service providers.

Qualifications

  • Must possess or be able to obtain a ServSafe Manager certification.
  • Interest in food and cooking.
  • Ability to stand for two hours at a time.
  • Manual dexterity for knife handling.
  • Ability to work with others.
  • Ability to take direction.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Written communication to name and organize files, complete timesheets, and communicate with supervisor.
  • Sincere respect for disadvantaged individuals.

  • High ethical standards.

  • Indoor environment: kitchen, open office, shelter dormitories, facilities, etc.
