About the role
Rochester Animal Services is seeking a Shelter Veterinarian to join a dynamic team dedicated to improving animal welfare through compassionate care and innovative practices. This role offers significant autonomy in developing and implementing medical protocols, driving positive outcomes, and contributing to the shelter's growth and transformation.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement medical procedures, treatment plans, disease prevention strategies, and shelter medicine initiatives
- Provide comprehensive care for shelter animals, including routine examinations, vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, and emergency care
- Collaborate with a team of licensed veterinary technicians and animal care staff to ensure high-quality care
- Contribute to the development and implementation of sanitation protocols and other health and safety measures
- Lead the shelter's medical team in maintaining and upgrading facilities and equipment to support efficient, high-quality care
- Support the Director of Animal Services in aligning medical practices with broader organizational goals and priorities
- Continuously improve medical protocols based on evidence-based medicine and emerging best practices
Requirements
- Current license to practice veterinary medicine in New York State
- Experience in shelter medicine and animal care
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment
- Knowledge of animal behavior and psychology
Qualifications
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from an AVMA-accredited institution
- Completion of an accredited internship or residency program in shelter medicine preferred
- Experience with exotic and avian species a plus
Skills
- Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite

Pay
$114,000 - $121,500 annual salary, commensurate with experience
