Sewer Foreman - Chief Operator

About the role

The Sewer Foreman - Chief Operator oversees daily sewer system operations and maintenance. This role involves coordinating and supervising staff activities, such as inspection, cleaning, repair, and monitoring of sewer lines, pump stations, and related equipment.

Responsibilities

• Schedule and assign work tasks to ensure efficient operations.
• Ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
• Maintain accurate operational records and reports.
• Collaborate with other municipal departments.
• Respond to service requests and emergencies.
• Communicate with residents and contractors to resolve sewer-related issues.
• Participate in budgeting, inventory control, and long-term planning for system improvements and upgrades.

Qualifications

• Strong communication and customer service skills.
• Experience supervising operations, leading crews, and coordinating field work in utilities, public works, or a similar environment.
• Knowledge of sewer system operations, wastewater collection, pump station equipment, and basic mechanical and electrical troubleshooting.
• Ability to read and interpret technical documents, maps, plans, and regulatory guidelines.
• Commitment to safety practices, including confined space entry, equipment operation, and use of personal protective equipment.
• Relevant licenses or certifications for wastewater/sewer operations in Massachusetts (minimum Grade 4M, Grade 5C Preferred), or eligibility and willingness to obtain them within required timeframes.
• A high school diploma or equivalent, with additional technical training in wastewater, utilities, or public works being beneficial.
• Physical ability to perform field work, including lifting, climbing, and working in varying weather conditions.
