Sessional Instructional Assistant position for the course Landscape Architecture Research Methods (LAN3051HF) at the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape & Design, St. George (Downtown Toronto) campus.

About the role

The purpose of the course is to study a site through its stakeholders' (or actors) eyes and define their needs, following a two-step process:

  • Exploring how notions of nature, environment, and landscape (NEL) are understood, represented, and shaped by stakeholders at the thesis site. These notions form part of a worldview, the lens through which the site will be approached.
  • Exploration of the site to pinpoint and define, by the end of the term, the focus—i.e., the research/design questions—to which a design solution will be applied.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the instructor in guiding students through their selection of disciplinary frameworks, audio/visual material, and scholarly references to properly document and address a site condition.
  • Annotate and grade a series of assignments that process the documentation and culminate in a research report.
  • Assess how students articulate together literature review, audio/visual documentation, methodology, and related design program/research questions in response to site-specific worldviews.

Qualifications

  • Minimum: PhD candidate in the Humanities or Social Science fields.
  • Preferred: Must have received a minimum grade of A in the course.

Schedule

  • Dates of appointment: September 1, 2026 – December 31, 2026
  • Class schedule: Thursdays, 12:00 PM – 3:00 PM
  • Hours of work: 100 hours total

Pay

$55.25 per hour (plus vacation pay). Rates stipulated in the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement will prevail over any posted rates.
