About the role

The Service Technician – Apprentice to First Class (North On-Call) position at Unitil is responsible for operating, maintaining, constructing, inspecting, and surveying all gas distribution jurisdictional assets. This role also involves responding as an emergency first responder to gas leak situations, ensuring public safety, and interacting professionally with customers, regulatory authorities, and employees.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and manage the company’s gas leak program.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to gas leak situations, adhering to regulatory guidelines.
  • Conduct annual distribution surveys, winter patrols, bridge surveys, business district and school surveys, interior atmospheric and corrosion surveys, exposed pipe surveys, and emissions surveys.
  • Prepare and execute construction and maintenance orders for the replacement or repair of facilities with gas leaks.
  • Utilize GIS/GPS mapping software and the gas CMS system for program execution.
  • Test CGI combustible gas indicators and PMD portable methane detectors or other company-approved equipment according to company procedures.
  • Maintain and care for company equipment, including vehicles, tools, and materials, ensuring proper operation and availability.
  • Inspect and diagnose customer rental gas appliances, including gas conversion burners and gas water heaters.
  • Diagnose and perform maintenance on customer’s rental gas appliances.
  • Install, maintain, and inspect meter sets and other jurisdictional assets.
  • Perform meter installs, sets, changes, and removals; transfers; turns on and turns off gas meters; delivers and recovers customer appliances; installs and tests gas piping; and diagnoses and performs maintenance on customer’s rental gas appliances.
  • Assist in and/or perform all duties within job series; work from schedules, work orders, established regulations, and written and/or verbal instructions of the supervisor.
  • Execute all forms and reports as required and perform other similar or related duties.
  • Work independently in a safe and professional manner, maintain required records, be consistently punctual, regular in attendance, and have a good safety record.
  • Be able to work from heights and recognize and react to abnormal operating conditions.
  • Accept Company assigned Service Department standby on a rotational basis.
  • Work in all types of weather conditions per collective bargaining agreement.
  • Reside within the specified geographic area and be available for duties during times of system emergencies.
  • Obtain Operator Qualification (O.Q.) certification based upon the requirements set forth in DOT 49 CFR 192, Subpart N.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Possess and maintain a valid New Hampshire State Gas License, or obtain within three years.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Maine State Gas Fitters License, or obtain within three years.
  • Respond to service calls when on standby as soon as possible, not to exceed 30 minutes from receiving call.
  • Possess and retain an unrestricted Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Possess and retain DOT medical examiners certificate.
  • Pass DOT Drug Screen if not presently working in a covered position.
  • Have the ability and aptitude to perform duties independently in a safe and professional manner.
  • Have the ability to maintain/keep required records satisfactorily.
  • Be consistently punctual, regular in attendance, and have a good safety record.
  • Be able to work from heights.
  • Must reside within the specified geographic area and respond within 30 minutes to gas leak emergencies, and be available for duties during times of system emergencies.
  • Must be able to obtain Operator Qualification (O.Q.) certification based upon the requirements set forth in DOT 49 CFR 192, Subpart N.
  • Must have the ability to recognize and react to abnormal operating conditions.

Pay

Ultimate rate - $50.34 per hour, for a 40-hour week. Overtime rates in accordance with Agreement. Starting wage will be in accordance with Contract.

Schedule

HOURS: The normal working hours for this position are in accordance with Article V.
