Service & Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment)

About the Role

Motor Equipment Mechanics perform skilled mechanical work in automotive repair, maintaining, repairing, and overhauling gasoline/diesel-powered self-propelled and non-self-propelled motor-driven equipment. They may also perform routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on disabled vehicles, construction, and other equipment in the field.

Mechanics diagnose the cause of breakdowns and faulty mechanical performance, performing major and minor mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repairs on vehicles and equipment such as passenger cars, trucks, buses, and compressors.

Responsibilities

• Use appropriate test equipment and observation to diagnose the cause of faulty mechanical or electrical performance.
• Plan work procedures required to make repairs and order replacement parts or materials.
• Repair, maintain, and adjust automotive electrical systems, including components such as ignitions, switches, generators, and alternators.
• Repair, maintain, and adjust elements of chassis assembly, including steering, front end, and hydraulic brakes.
• Maintain gasoline and/or diesel engines, replacing or repairing parts such as valves, bearings, gears, shafts, pistons, rings, oil, fuel, and radiator systems.
• Repair and service conventional and automatic transmissions, including clutch assemblies, differentials, transfer cases, and torque converters.
• Perform preventive maintenance (PM) inspections of vehicles and equipment to ensure safe and trouble-free operations.
• Conduct periodic safety inspections of State-owned vehicles.
• Supervise subordinate employees, including Maintenance Assistants, Facility Operations Assistants, and Motor Vehicle Operators, as well as other journey-level positions.
• Develop computer skills to operate the Department’s facilities management system.
• Respond to emergency call-ins and overtime work as required.

Requirements

• Minimum of four (4) years of full-time experience under a skilled journey-level automotive or diesel mechanic, providing training equivalent to that of an apprenticeship program.
• Apprentice training in automotive or diesel mechanics, or completion of technical courses in these fields at a school or technical institute, may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
• Valid New York State driver’s license.
• Must possess or be able to acquire a CDL-B driver’s permit with air brake endorsement within thirty (30) days and licensure within the first six months of the probationary period.
• Must pass a physical examination in Albany, NY, prior to appointment.

Skills

• Working knowledge of practices and techniques for mechanical and electrical repairs on gas-powered automotive, diesel buses, electric vehicles, and other motor-driven equipment.
• Working knowledge of the operation of automotive equipment, electric vehicles, and other motor-driven equipment.
• Ability to use tools, equipment, and materials of the mechanical trade.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical or electrical problems in gas and/or diesel-powered self-propelled and non-self-propelled automotive equipment.
• Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to supervise and train others, as assigned.
• Ability to read and interpret technical maintenance manuals, circuit diagrams, and blueprints.

Schedule

• Initial assignment: 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday through Friday, with Saturday and Sunday as days off.
• May be required to provide a home telephone number and accept emergency call-ins and overtime work as necessary.
