Service and Repair Mechanic (Motor Equipment)

About the role

Service & Repair Mechanics perform skilled mechanical work within a vehicle maintenance center for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of gasoline, diesel-powered, and alternative fuel self-propelled and non-self-propelled motor-driven equipment. This role may also involve routine maintenance and mechanical repairs on disabled vehicles, construction, and other equipment in the field.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose and correct causes of faulty vehicle and equipment operation.
• Overhaul, adjust, and repair gaseous fuel engines, clutches, transmissions, and differentials.
• Repair ignition, wiring, lighting, fuel, cooling, braking, and hydraulic systems.
• Service steering, wheel, and suspension mechanisms; body, cab, and frame components.
• Conduct NYS inspections.
• Overhaul, repair, and rebuild starters, generators, compressors, pumps (fuel, water, air, and hydraulic), small engines, mowers, and a variety of other equipment, including off-road vehicles, watercraft, tractors, and trailers.
• Diagnose and repair electronic engine control systems, anti-lock brake systems, and air conditioning.
• Perform metal cutting, welding, brazing, and fabrication.
• Schedule service and repair appointments, make road calls, and test drive equipment.
• Complete reports, use parts catalogs, purchase parts, order, receive, and maintain inventory supplies for vehicle equipment maintenance and repairs.

Requirements

• Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic responsible for diagnosing faulty vehicle/equipment operation and performing mechanical repairs covering several aspects of automotive and/or diesel systems.
• OR an associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.
• Must become a certified motor vehicle inspector (Group 1 & 2) within 6 months of appointment.
• Valid driver’s license or ability to meet the transportation needs of the position.
• Ability to negotiate difficult terrain and work in remote areas or adverse weather conditions.
• Availability for emergency response, including after-hours emergencies.
• Ability to lift and move objects up to 80 pounds.
• Willingness to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and travel (including overnight) as required.

Qualifications

Education may substitute for experience as follows:

• Graduation from a technical or vocational program (e.g., B.O.C.E.S) in automotive or diesel technology may substitute for one year of experience.
• Graduation from a one-year post-high school certificate program in automotive or diesel repair technology may substitute for up to two years of experience.

Additional Information

This is an hourly appointment currently funded through 11/30/2026, with a likelihood of continuing beyond that date. Program needs and funding will determine the actual termination date.
