Sergeant (#019563) Kershaw Correctional Inst, Kershaw (LANCASTER) Level 2

Responsibilities

• Supervise subordinate security personnel assigned to housing units, and oversee the custody and control of all inmates in those units.
• Conduct routine inspections of living areas to ensure compliance with security, safety, and sanitation standards.
• Investigate alleged misconduct by inmates and security personnel within the assigned area.
• Assist in conducting formal and informal inmate counts.
• Supervise, evaluate, and prepare performance reports for assigned security personnel.
• Counsel, recommend disciplinary action, and train subordinate staff to meet required performance standards.
• Prepare reports as needed or required.
• Perform duties of the Shift Lieutenant when necessary.
• Complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Requirements

• High school diploma.
• Eighteen (18) months of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related field may substitute for half of the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of hire.
