About the role

Supervises a security shift responsible for the security operations of a level two correctional facility. Oversees perimeter and internal security measures, resource allocation, and compliance with state laws and agency policies.

Responsibilities

• Schedule, direct, and manage the employment and duty activities of a security shift.
• Supervise, inspect, and enforce proper perimeter and internal security and control measures.
• Prepare, submit, and monitor reports required by the chain of command and policy.
• Direct and redirect security resources for optimum security and safety.
• Ensure institutional buildings and state property are properly secured.
• Train, develop, instruct, evaluate, and counsel subordinates to ensure duty performance aligns with state laws and agency policies.
• Ensure proper control, issuance, and use of weapons, keys, security devices, and agency equipment.
• Inspect all posts where shift employees are deployed.
• Interview and counsel inmates as necessary to ensure maximum safety and security.
• Serve as Restricted Housing Unit (RHU) Captain.

Requirements

• High school diploma.
• Six (6) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, including two (2) years of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related field may substitute for supervisory experience year-for-year (associate degree and above = 2 years).
• Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
