Sergeant (#014924) McCormick Correctional Institution, McCormick (MCCORMICK) Level 3

Responsibilities

• Under general supervision of the Shift Lieutenant, assist in instructing and directing officers in a program of discipline.
• Is responsible for the overall supervision of subordinate security assigned to the housing unit and for the supervision, custody, and control of all inmates assigned to the housing units.
• Make routine inspections of the living areas for compliance with security, safety, and sanitation standards.
• Conduct investigations of alleged misconduct on the part of inmates and security personnel assigned.
• Assist in conducting formal and informal counts.
• Supervises job performance, conduct and appearance of security personnel.
• Counsel, recommend disciplinary action, train subordinate staff and prepare reports as needed.
• Perform duties of Lieutenant when necessary.
• Sergeant will be assigned to RHU.

Requirements

• High school diploma and relevant experience (State of South Carolina minimum); a bachelor’s degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
• High school diploma and eighteen (18) months experience in correctional, security, military, or police work (SCDC minimum); a degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for half of the required experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
• Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
