Senior Writer, Investigations
About the role
WIRED seeks a reporter adept at building and working with data sets and/or open source tools to break impactful stories in technology, cybersecurity, science, and beyond. This role requires both traditional reporting skills and technological chops, with a focus on visual and open source investigations, data journalism, or a combination of these. Coding ability is a plus but not mandatory. You’ll produce at least four stories per month, collaborate across WIRED’s newsroom, and work in a variety of formats including social, podcasts, video, and live events. The role is in-office (4 days/week) in New York or San Francisco and reports to WIRED’s Director of Science, Politics, and Security.
Responsibilities
- Consistently break news and deliver scoops
- Report and write at least four stories per month, primarily focused on differentiated investigative work using data, open source tools, or visual investigations
- Pitch, report, and write stories with a focus on uncovering leads through technological and traditional means
- Collaborate with the security desk and journalists across the WIRED newsroom
- Work with audio, video, events, and social media teams to adapt stories for multiple platforms
- Collaborate with global markets on relevant stories or packages
- Take on additional projects and stories as assigned
Requirements
- At least 4 years of experience as a journalist with a track record of investigative data or OSINT reporting
- A proven track record of scoops and the ability to consistently break news
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage a constantly evolving workload and prioritize effectively
- A clear, engaging, and jargon-free writing style
Pay
The expected base salary range for this position is $95,000–$129,000. Salary offers are based on relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
