Senior Water Resources Engineer-North Carolina

About the role

This opportunity is for a Senior Water Resources Engineer to join a motivated and engaged Water Resources Team in one of WSP’s North Carolina offices. The role involves leading a variety of water resources projects, including conveyance system analysis and design, complex hydraulic modeling, stream restoration, and stormwater control measure (SCM) design. The position offers the chance to mentor a growing team of water resources engineers while collaborating with diverse clients to advance environmental stewardship and sustainable infrastructure development.

Responsibilities

• Engage with local clients such as NCDOT, Raleigh, Charlotte, Wilmington, and Wake Forest to address statewide water resources challenges.
• Participate in business development activities, including marketing, client engagement, and project initiation.
• Guide the identification, prioritization, selection, and pursuit of opportunities to shape the future of the group and the state.
• Mentor and collaborate with a growing local team of water resources engineers, leveraging national and regional expertise.
• Lead project teams in preparing technical reports and designs for stormwater and water resources projects.
• Ensure project deliverables—plans, specifications, reports, and analyses—meet scope, schedule, cost, and quality requirements.
• Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.

Requirements

• BS or MS in environmental, civil, bio & ag, or a related field of engineering from an accredited program.
• Professional Engineering (P.E.) license in North Carolina, or eligibility to obtain one.
• 7–10 years of relevant experience applying engineering principles and practices in areas such as:
  • Stormwater conveyance and flood mitigation
  • Environmental permitting and restoration
  • Watershed assessment and water quality improvement
  • Hydraulic design for highway/transit projects
  • Bridge hydraulic/scour analysis and floodplain management
• Strong communication skills with the ability to mentor and lead team members and coordinate across disciplines.
• Proficiency with hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and design software, including Open Roads Designer, MicroStation/Geopak, Civil 3D, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, StormCAD, SWMM, and SRH-2D.
• Ability to perform hydrologic and hydraulic calculations and prepare technical documents such as reports, plans, specifications, and construction cost estimates with supervisory support.
• Commitment to producing high-quality technical and professional deliverables on projects and proposals.
• Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Proven ability to contribute to the delivery of complex stormwater and water resources design projects.
• Interest in working in-person at the office at least three days per week.
• Recent experience with NCDOT and/or municipal (NC) stormwater clients.
• Community involvement and affiliation with relevant professional societies.
• Passion for improving local communities, protecting the natural environment, and serving clients as a trusted advisor.
