About the role
We are looking for a Senior UX Developer to support the NIH Data Lakehouse. This role sits at the intersection of human-centered design, data-intensive workflows, and front-end engineering.
Responsibilities
- UX/UI Design
- Lead human-centered design efforts for lakehouse workflows, from discovery through delivery
- Conduct user research, usability testing, and stakeholder interviews to inform design decisions
- Create wireframes, prototypes, journey maps, user flows, and interaction models for data search, filtering, access, and review experiences
- Design interfaces that help users understand complex data, metadata, permissions, and status information with clarity and confidence
- Advocate for accessibility, inclusivity, privacy-aware design, and Section 508 compliance
- Front-End Engineering
- Build high-quality, scalable UI components and features that support lakehouse workflows and dashboards
- Implement responsive, performant, and maintainable front-end architecture
- Collaborate with engineers to ensure design fidelity, technical feasibility, and consistency across the platform
- Integrate with GraphQL APIs, search services, and other backend systems that power data lakehouse use experiences
- Contribute to design systems, component libraries, and front-end best practices for platform-wide reuse
Qualifications
- 5–8+ years of experience in UX design, front-end development, or a hybrid role
- Strong portfolio demonstrating human-centered design thinking and shipped digital products or data platform experiences
- Proficiency with modern front-end technologies, including: React, Next.js, GraphQL / GQL, TypeScript, and component-based architecture
- Experience conducting user research and translating insights into actionable design decisions
- Experience creating prototypes in relevant design or product tools
- Strong understanding of interaction design, information architecture, usability principles, and complex workflow design
- Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience supporting scientific, research, healthcare, or public-sector data platforms
- Experience with design systems at an enterprise scale
- Knowledge of performance optimization, SSR/ISR, and modern rendering strategies
- Experience designing engagement mechanisms, gamification features, or incentive-based user experiences that encourage platform adoption, data stewardship, collaboration, training completion, and effective use of enterprise data platforms
- Experience supporting Federal, HHS OpDiv, or NIH programs preferred
- Section 508 experience
