Senior Underwriting Officer, Construction
This role works with the largest and most complex Construction risks to deliver Primary Casualty (WC, GL, Auto) for annual practice and wrap-up programs to highly valued customers and prospects. The position focuses on the Large Construction portfolio, serving many of the largest contractors in the U.S. The role involves collaborating with the leadership team, providing technical expertise, and serving as a point of contact for frontline underwriting teams on key decisions or referrals. Additionally, the role contributes to developing and implementing portfolio strategies to maintain and improve performance.
Responsibilities
- Provides expert technical underwriting assistance and formal referral approval for multiple lines of business (auto, general liability, workers' compensation, and lead/excess) in Large Construction.
- Interacts independently with field underwriters and directly with underwriting managers on all mandatory referral cases and voluntary consultation items.
- Ensures continuity and alignment between Primary Casualty and Excess (as applicable) placements.
- Supports leadership on transactions and serves as a trusted advisor on exposure, coverage analysis, and key pricing/financial elements within their authority.
- Monitors frameworks for underwriting decisions (e.g., referrals, technical reviews) and recommends improvements as needed.
- Evaluates portfolio performance regularly in Large Construction, working with Underwriting Leaders to identify drivers of performance, risks, and opportunities.
- Drives underwriting technical excellence across Large Construction, collaborating with Underwriting Leaders to identify and resolve issues.
- Works with underwriting leaders to identify product and service enhancements and underwriter capability development opportunities (e.g., skills, tools) and coordinates improvements/resources.
- Models effective collaboration within and across teams, stakeholders, and partners (e.g., Underwriting Support, Claims, Actuarial, NA Product Teams).
Requirements
- Expert-level knowledge of all aspects of coverage forms, exclusions, and exposure.
- Advanced knowledge of pricing, structure, rating, rating plans, loss forecasting, credit risk, and market trends.
- Experience operating within several different industry segments, with a focus on Construction programs; familiarity with insurance operations, claims, finance, actuarial concepts, regulatory environment, loss control/risk engineering, reinsurance, account management, product development, and industry trends.
- Strong collaboration skills, including the ability to assess multiple perspectives, engage experts, and independently execute and advance a collaboration model.
- Superior communication skills (written, verbal, presentation, listening), approachability, tact, coaching/development, analytical and problem-solving abilities, relationship and service orientation, solutions-driven mindset, negotiation skills, and demonstrated ability to influence others both internally and externally (brokers/customers).
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field and 10+ years of relevant experience, including underwriting, claims, reinsurance, coaching/developing others, working with brokers/agents, and staying current with market trends and developments.

The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by factors such as skills, experience, education, certifications, and location. The full salary range reflects the competitive labor market value for this position across the national market and provides opportunities for progression as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles may include commission and/or bonus earnings based on factors outlined in the compensation plan.
