Senior Underwriter, Surety

About the Role

The Senior Surety Underwriter is responsible for underwriting individual surety risks, focusing on profitability while meeting customer needs. Key areas of expertise include risk assessment, financial analysis, actuarial fundamentals, and strategic marketing and communications.

Responsibilities

• Underwrite surety credits to generate profit while addressing customer needs.
• Identify risk exposures, analyze contracts and bond forms, and differentiate risks on an account-specific basis.
• Conduct underwriting meetings with customers to understand operations and internal controls.
• Apply sophisticated understanding of financial statements and ratios used in surety underwriting.
• Understand the impact of underwriting decisions on company results and credit risk.
• Analyze loss trends, loss triangles, and ratemaking to quantify risk based on experience history and forecasting.
• Build relationships internally and externally to grow the book of business and achieve profitability.
• Make strategic presentations and communicate articulately.
• Manage producer strategy and use systems/software for daily business operations.
• Market and prospect for new business, traveling 10-25% throughout the assigned territory.
• Document underwriting files and determine terms, conditions, and complex rating plans.
• Handle complex files and portfolios, and guide and mentor junior staff.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, or marketing preferred.
• 3+ years of surety underwriting experience.
• Achieved or working towards the AFSB (Associates in Fidelity and Surety Bonding) designation.
• Knowledge of the surety industry, underwriting concepts, practices, and procedures.
• Strong organization, negotiation, and marketing skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and internet usage.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Basic leadership skills and dedication to providing great customer service.
