Underwriter, Surety
About the role
The Underwriter is responsible for managing and underwriting a portfolio of commercial surety accounts, developing and maintaining agency and broker relationships, and generating new business opportunities.
Responsibilities
- Solicits new and renewal submissions from brokers while basing communications on strategic thinking and broader producer strategies
- With the guidance of management, learns to manage the underwriting process by utilizing a broad range of financial expertise, industry knowledge, and business acumen
- Drives the dual underwriting process by providing intelligent, well thought out recommendations and company analyses
- Develops awareness of industry trends and external economic factors, and extrapolates their impact on the business and customers' businesses
- Changes tactics or strategies to reflect such trends
- Identifies risk exposures, special or common hazards, and appropriate controls
- Enhances the Company’s presence in assigned territories via relationship building with both internal and external customers, and by providing superior service to both internal and external stakeholders
- Demonstrates independent decision making, and has demonstrated leadership qualities
- Takes responsibility for the fulfillment of department goals established for profit, service, and relationship management with branches, home office, producers, accounts, competitors, and other Chubb departments
- Uses discipline and available underwriting and pricing tools to reduce risk profile across a wide spectrum of business, and to manage costs in order to meet targeted profitability metrics
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree
- 1-3 years surety underwriting (or comparable) work experience
Qualifications
- Knowledge of insurance industry
- Knowledge of basic business financial reports
- Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook proficiency
- Internet usage
- Oral and written communication skills
- Negotiation skills
- Marketing skills
- Basic leadership skills

- Ability to use systems and software programs needed to conduct daily business
Benefits
The pay range for the role is $82,000 to $118,000. The specific offer will depend on an applicant’s skills and other factors. This role may also be eligible to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program.
