SENIOR TRANSPORTATION ENGINEER, CALTRANS

About the role
Under the general supervision of the Deputy District 9 Director for Right of Way, Project & Asset Management, the Project Manager (PM) is responsible for delivering assigned capital projects, including special or locally funded projects. The PM ensures each project is completed in accordance with the approved scope, schedule, and budget, and has authority over project team members regarding cost, schedule, and coordination of work. The PM coordinates with local partners and represents District 9 Project Management with transparency and accountability.
As a Senior Transportation Engineer, the PM is accountable for delivering capital projects from initiation through completion, including those with significant civil engineering components. The PM manages project team members to develop and uphold commitments for costs, schedules, and work coordination, ensuring quality projects are delivered within approved parameters. The PM monitors and coordinates activities performed by Capital Outlay functions, communicates and collaborates with Headquarters, District functions, local agencies, and external stakeholders, and keeps the Single Focal Point (SFP) informed of major issues.
Responsibilities
- Deliver capital projects in accordance with approved scope, schedule, and budget.
- Manage project team members regarding cost, schedule, and coordination of work.
- Coordinate with local partners and represent District 9 Project Management.
- Oversee projects with significant civil engineering components from initiation to completion.
- Monitor and coordinate activities performed by Capital Outlay functions.
- Communicate and collaborate with Headquarters, District functions, local agencies, and external stakeholders.
- Report major unresolved issues to the Single Focal Point (SFP).
- Ensure quality project delivery within approved parameters.
Requirements
- Valid certificate of registration as a Civil Engineer issued by the California State Board of Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license when operating a State-owned or leased vehicle.
- Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Senior Transportation Engineer exam. New-to-state candidates must be on the state examination list to be eligible.
Qualifications
Applicants must submit a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) addressing the following (typed, no more than two pages, 12-point Arial font):
- Examples of experience managing complex transportation engineering projects, including your role, key technical challenges, and how you resolved them.
- Description of how you led an interdisciplinary project team through a critical milestone in Project Delivery, including how you facilitated collaboration, resolved conflicts, and ensured accountability.
- Examples of previous work experience demonstrating your ability to communicate, collaborate, and engage with community groups, agencies, and elected officials that resulted in positive outcomes.
Possession of Minimum Qualifications will be verified prior to interview and/or appointment. If basing eligibility on education, include unofficial transcript(s)/diploma for verification. Applicants with foreign transcripts/degrees must provide a U.S. equivalency report evaluation.
Pay
$11,437.00 - $14,315.00 per month. New-to-state candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
Special Notes
- Business travel may be required; reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions.
- All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
- This position may be eligible for telework, with in-person attendance required based on operational needs.
