Senior Traction Power Engineer
About the role
We are seeking a Senior Traction Power Engineer to join our multidisciplinary team focusing on technical excellence and innovative solutions that shape a better future for people and the planet. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing Arup’s business and capability in Traction Power and Electrification in North America, particularly in 2x 25KVac systems, and supporting other forms of electrification like DC traction.
Responsibilities
- Performing traction power simulations, understanding inputs, different simulation tools, types of scenarios, and limitations.
- Understanding and applying System Safety Certification processes and RAMS.
- Leading client engagement in Traction Power areas, requiring strong communication skills and the ability to articulate technical subject matter clearly and succinctly.
- Delivering preliminary designs for Traction Power ensuring full compliance with the Quality Management process.
- Providing technical requirements to enable procurement of suitable vendors for the Traction Power system.
- Reviewing detailed designs from Traction Power systems vendors and overseeing the installation and testing of these systems.
- Working collaboratively with other disciplines and partners within our Track and Systems Construction Contract (TSCC) consortium.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in engineering.
- Experience working directly with clients in a leadership role.
- 10 years of Traction Power experience, preferably 2x 25KVac, but also interested in DC traction.
- Direct experience of practical issues during installation, testing, and commissioning, and entry into service.
- Proven understanding of System Safety Certification processes and RAMS.
- Knowledgeable in railway standards such as CENELEC, AREMA, MIL-STD, IEEE, and EN.
- Engineering Concepts, including Design, Verification & Validation, and System Integration.
- Professional Engineer designation in California or equivalent.
- Demonstrable understanding of owner/client capital project drivers and priorities.
- Basic understanding of construction project procurement approaches, project schedule, and cost estimate documents.
- Ability to plan, coordinate, and lead design/consulting delivery teams.
Qualifications
- Strong preference for candidates who have been involved in a rail systems project from beginning to end.
- Passion for learning and understanding different technologies.
Skills
- Strong domain knowledge in 2x 25KVac, including new technology such as Static Frequency Converters.
- Good understanding of the Power SCADA system and its safety/human factors aspects.
- Curiosity about electrification and its pros and cons.

Pay
The good faith base salary hiring range for this role if performed in San Francisco is $170,000 to $190,000 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary.
