About the role

The Senior Tooling Engineer plays a critical role in the New Product Introduction (NPI) programs and ongoing product line initiatives. They are responsible for developing robust Die Operational Lineups (DOLs) that meet both product and operational requirements, leading and facilitating the Production Preparation Process (3P) to design and implement tooling, equipment, and processes aligned with the full value stream.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with part design engineers and Die Engineering to develop robust Die Operational Lineups (DOLs) that meet both product and operational requirements.
  • Lead and facilitate the Production Preparation Process (3P) to design and implement tooling, equipment, and processes aligned to the full value stream.
  • Ensure tooling and equipment designs support right-sized equipment, ergonomic workstation design, optimized material presentation, standard work, and single-piece flow.
  • Ensure all tooling and equipment meet industry and governmental Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) standards.
  • Apply Human Organizational Performance (HOP) principles to prioritize operator safety and usability in all designs.
  • Collaborate with functional leaders to align tooling and processes with Bill of Process (BoP), Lean Manufacturing, Ergonomic Design, and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) initiatives.
  • Work closely with factory operations and Lean teams to understand value streams and ensure tooling designs support material flow, workstation layout, model mix, and productivity goals.
  • Apply the 9-Step Process for tooling and equipment design, engaging Critical Process leaders to ensure robust, repeatable manufacturing processes.
  • Develop Manufacturing Control Plans (MCPs) and Manufacturing Control Instructions (MCIs) in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
  • Influence product designs by ensuring Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA) principles are incorporated early.
  • Contribute technical expertise and lessons learned to strengthen the metal stamping and AME knowledge base and drive continuous improvement across the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related discipline
  • 5+ years’ experience with tooling procurement & sheet metal die design concepts, die components and applications
  • Familiarity in 3D CAD (ProE, Solidworks, Creo or equivalent)
  • Preferred: Working knowledge of simulation software (Auto Form or equivalent) and relevant input parameters
  • Experience with implementing Lean process improvement in a manufacturing operation
  • Prior NPI program experience

Qualifications

  • Working Environment: Both an office and manufacturing environment
  • Hours & Weekends: Working off-shift and weekends will be required
  • Travel: 20% travel may be required during peak project times for domestic and/or international travel to supplier sites/plants, etc.
