The New York City Department of Homeless Services

About the role

The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is dedicated to preventing and addressing homelessness. It partners with other City agencies and nonprofit organizations to provide shelter, support, and services to those experiencing homelessness.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the implementation of Enhanced Client Support Unit initiatives by conducting training sessions for staff and providers.
  • Research and prepare reports using quantitative statistical analysis of trend data.
  • Direct unit activity centered on the development and implementation of program designs to address emergent client needs.
  • Analyze long-term trends in Next Step shelters and program shelters, number of clients receiving ILP violations, sanctions, and transitions to independent living.
  • Coordinate unit activities by providing directions to enhance communication between the Agency, Next Step shelters, and Program shelters.
  • Oversee human resources issues for unit staff; ensure compliance with Agency’s Code of Conduct, Time and Leave Regulations, EEO Law, Absence Control Program, Performance Evaluations, and Tasks and Standards guidelines.

Requirements

The successful candidate must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and four years of progressively responsible experience in social services, including one year at the administrative or managerial level. Alternatively, a combination of education and experience may be considered, with graduate education or a license substituting for up to three years of experience in social services.

Qualifications

  • Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" above, with graduate education or a license substituting for up to three years of experience in social services.
  • Knowledge of social services and homeless services administration and policies.
  • Knowledge of citywide personnel policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of city labor relations policies, ability to communicate with city workers on all levels.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to write concisely, communicate information, and conduct interdisciplinary group activities.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of social services and homeless services administration and policies.
  • Knowledge of citywide personnel policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of city labor relations policies, ability to communicate with city workers on all levels.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to write concisely, communicate information, and conduct interdisciplinary group activities.

Benefits

This position is open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a Program. Public Service Loan Forgiveness is available for prospective employees of the City of New York. New York City Residency is not required for this position.

Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm.
