Position Overview
The Senior Tax Manager, Indirect Tax, will lead Milliken's U.S. sales and use tax function through three key initiatives: a move to a new outsourced compliance provider, a deep-dive review of the sales and use tax process, and the selection and launch of a new exemption certificate management system. This is a hands-on leadership role. The right person will manage providers, fix process gaps across SAP, Ariba and Vertex, and work with Customer Service, IT, Procurement and Accounting so tax is calculated correctly on every sale and purchase. The position is located at the company’s corporate headquarters in Spartanburg, SC, and reports to the Director, Domestic Tax. Any travel would be minimal.
Responsibilities
- Lead the outsourced compliance transition: Move monthly sales and use tax filing to the new provider. Then manage the provider on service levels, return review and approval, data quality and invoice review.
- Own the sales and use tax process review: Work with outside advisors to document how things work today, find gaps across SAP, Ariba, Vertex and the customer master data system, and build a multi-year improvement plan. This includes moving use tax from an average effective-rate approach to tax decided on each transaction leveraging the Vertex system.
- Lead the exemption certificate system upgrade: Build the business case, select and implement the new system, and run certificate cleanup, migration and renewals for about 25,000 customers.
- Strengthen controls and audit readiness: Own sales and use tax policies, controls, registrations, notices, audits and use tax accruals. Report key measures and risks to the VP, Global Tax.
- Develop people and business partners: Coach indirect tax staff and train Customer Service, IT and Procurement on how their work affects tax.
Requirements
- 8+ years of multistate sales and use tax experience.

- Track record of mapping and fixing inefficient workflows across teams.
- Experience leading a tax technology implementation, ideally exemption certificate management (e.g., Vertex, Avalara, CERTifyTax).
- End-to-end experience managing state sales and use tax audits.
- Bias for action and efficiency, with a strong interest in using AI and automation to improve tax processes.
- Self-directed and highly organized, able to manage multiple priorities with urgency and drive.
- Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
Qualifications
- Multistate sales and use tax experience at a manufacturer.
- CPA, CMI (Sales Tax), or master's degree in Taxation.
- Experience with Power BI or other data tools.
