Job Summary
The Systems Test Engineer will act as Waymo's test engineering representative across various technical domains, guiding partners through the transition to automated, data-driven testing methods. They will spearhead cross-functional collaboration, define and execute vehicle-level testing operations, and ensure strict traceability and logging standards.
About the Role
This role follows a hybrid work schedule and reports to the Systems Test Engineering Lead. The Systems Test Engineer will support the development of test strategies, detailed plans, and scripts, ensuring that Waymo's vehicles meet high performance standards and are ready for integration.
Responsibilities
- Guide partners in transitioning from manual to automated testing methodologies, collaborating with internal infrastructure teams to streamline the test-to-reporting feedback loop.
- Spearhead cross-functional collaboration with Waymo and OEM stakeholders, addressing operational gaps, and mentoring partner engineers to enhance their expertise in complex validation processes.
- Define, execute, and manage early vehicle smoke test campaigns, setting strict entry/exit criteria for "SDS-Ready" software releases before integration.
- Scale and lead in-territory vehicle-level testing operations, overseeing daily physical test execution alongside embedded vendor teams.
- Ensure strict traceability and logging standards are met across all external test executions to facilitate seamless integration into Waymo's central data repositories.
Requirements
- Professional fluency in Japanese (N1 level or equivalent)
- Strong background in systems engineering, test engineering, or automotive validation
- Demonstrated leadership experience with a track record of managing technical teams and driving engineering excellence
- Ability to navigate ambiguity and drive technical consensus across different organizational cultures
Qualifications
- Experience with physical hands-on testing of Autonomous Vehicles
- Experience with requirements management tools (e.g., Jama, DOORS) and issue tracking (e.g., Jira)
- Strong knowledge of Systems Engineering principles and experience developing verification coverage plans from system level requirements
- Proficiency in Python or SQL for test automation or scripting
Benefits
Willingness to travel >50% of the time or relocate to partner sites. The expected base salary range for this full-time position across US locations is $196,000—$242,000 USD. Waymo employees are also eligible to participate in the company's discretionary annual bonus program, equity incentive plan, and generous benefits program.
