Senior Systems Administrator
Salary: $7,549.22 - $9,833.61 per month, depending on experience
About the Role
The Senior Systems Administrator is a position that requires expertise in multiple technical areas and is responsible for systems of profound County-wide importance. Errors in judgment could result in severe financial losses or legal liability for the County. This position assists in ensuring the stability and efficiency of operation of the County computer systems by planning, developing, installing, configuring, maintaining, supporting, and optimizing network and/or server-based hardware, software, and/or communication links.
Responsibilities
- Provides planning, leadership, guidance, and advanced technical expertise for computer and network services for both local and wide area networks and the internet.
- Serves as the technical expert for computer/network systems and associated issues.
- Configures, installs, and maintains directory structures, security, and applications software.
- Understands County applications and the variety of ways applications can be used for special use cases.
- Prepares and maintains up-to-date documentation, supporting assigned and related areas of responsibility, including application environments, system blueprints, schematics, and procedures.
- Supervises, coordinates, and participates in troubleshooting and resolving complex issues, including hardware, software, and network architecture (e.g., connectivity, internet access, email, and file servers). May lead problem-solving efforts involving outside vendors and other support personnel.
- Troubleshoots and solves the most complex application problems, including monitoring servers for issues, diagnosing problems, and taking corrective measures to ensure expedient resolution.
- Assists with the definition and implementation of application disaster recovery, including hardware, software, information protection, and file integrity.
- Maintains, prepares, and upholds processes for reporting, statistically monitoring, and logging network and application performance. Identifies and resolves the most complex issues facing the server and network infrastructure.
- Designs and implements core infrastructure technologies, including identity management, access control, capacity planning, applications, and networks.
- Performs ongoing administration and account maintenance of the Office 365 tenant, troubleshoots key end-user scenarios, and develops workflows and processes (e.g., using PowerShell scripts).
- Assists the Director in the development and implementation of appropriate policies concerning the overall County IT infrastructure, including testing, planning, and application policies.
- Develops and coordinates project directions and schedules to maximize benefits and minimize impacts on County departments, providing leadership in planning and implementation from start to finish.
- Performs database administration, including writing and editing queries for business intelligence, translating business requirements into system requirements, and creating strategic roadmaps for business intelligence.
- Supports remote and local users with accessing the County’s network via current and emerging remote connectivity solutions. Probes emerging network technologies, assesses and tests specialized network solutions, and makes recommendations for future hardware/software needs.
- Functions as the technical expert in storage area network (SAN) system implementation, upgrades, and integrations. Monitors the County SAN, verifies systems availability, and facilitates storage integration.
- Provides expert guidance and reporting on information security issues to the IT Director, including analyzing and reviewing federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance.
- Trains and mentors System Administrator II, System Administrator I, and IT Technician positions.
- Backs up and assists the Senior Network and Cyber Administrator as needed.
- May act as a lead for project implementations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a four-year college or technical school; or eight years of related experience and/or training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Desirable for candidates to have Microsoft, CompTIA, or comparable certifications.
- Current Driver’s License.

- Knowledge of setup and operation of devices such as smartphones, VOIP systems, tablets, printers, and copiers.
- Ability to remain current on technology trends and cyber threats.

Schedule
- Normal work schedule is 40 hours per week; exact schedule assigned by the IT Director.
- Requires some level of 24x7 on-call availability, divided among department staff.
