Senior System Engineer

As we build a new team in Reston, VA, we're looking for engineers and technologists ready to pioneer emerging tools and techniques, while maintaining the reliability aerospace demands and delivering new products and capabilities at a brisk pace. This is an onsite position in Reston, VA. To conform to U.S. export control regulations, applicants must be eligible for any required U.S. Government authorization. Within the navigation systems design group, you will lead and/or conduct systems engineering activities for the design and development of Flight Management Systems (FMS), participating in all aspects of avionics function development and aircraft modernization projects. You'll build deep familiarity with CMC's product functions, hardware, algorithms, system architecture, and industry/customer needs, contributing directly to product success.
Responsibilities
- Review customer requests and develop technical solutions that meet requirements.
- Interface with system designers (team members and contractors) and customer representatives to assess proposed concepts and recommend solutions meeting cost, schedule, and performance requirements.
- Analyze avionics system design problems and ensure sound synthesis and design of a functional system.
- Coordinate with hardware and software development teams, translating functional designs into validated and verified solutions.
- Contribute across the full system development life cycle: requirements analysis, design, development, testing, and deployment.
- Produce or review system-level specifications and technical manuals.
- Plan, set up, and participate in avionics systems verification testing (e.g., FMS integration with IRS, GPS, Autopilot, EFIS, navigation radios, datalink/communications systems, surveillance systems).
- Contribute to continuous improvement of processes and products.
- Learn and incorporate relevant industry standards into product design.
- Serve as Subject Matter Expert supporting CMC's Airworthiness team in communications with Transport Canada for CAN-TSO Design Approval.
- Occasional travel may be required.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in electrical, aerospace, or computer engineering.
- 5+ years of experience developing, validating, and/or verifying commercial/military avionics systems (FMS, sensors, displays, autopilot, MCDU, etc.).
- Experience with real-time embedded systems, including hardware/software integration.
- Experience using flight simulators, emulators, logic analyzers, and test equipment.
- Knowledge of civil/military avionics standards: DO-178 (or equivalent), MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429.
- Knowledge of FMS core functions (ARINC 702A), RNP, and FANS Datalink concepts.
- Knowledge of relevant regulations (FAA AC20-138, FAA TSO-C115, RTCA DO-236/283, EASA CS-ACNS).
Qualifications
- C/C++ development experience.
- Experience with displays, guidance systems, navigation systems, aircraft simulation, or related avionics systems.
- Knowledge of model-based development tools (Rhapsody, Simulink, SCADE).
- Knowledge of Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) standards (RTCA DO-297, ARINC 653/661/664, TSO-C153a, TSO-C214).
- Knowledge of military radio functions (FMS).
- Aircraft pilot experience.
- Prior FMS systems design/development experience with broad knowledge of FMS functions.
