Essential Job Functions

  • Contribute to Surgical Services Revenue:
    • Perform simple to complex small animal surgeries
    • Provide in-house hands-on surgical training for DSI customers
    • Perform surgeries for pre-implanted small animals at DSI for shipment to the customer
    • Support product development: Performing survival and acute surgery on small animals
    • Participate in cross-functional teams for new products and product refinements
    • Conduct chronic testing and data collection on animals
    • Maintain detailed records of animal implants and explants
    • Create and maintain surgical manuals, tech notes, and other applicable materials
    • Provide surgical support to customers and sales reps
  • Contribute to Maintaining the Laboratory:
    • Monitor the health and welfare of all animals following applicable guidelines for care and use of laboratory animals
    • Work weekends and holidays to conduct health checks
    • Provide peri and post-operative animal care duties
    • Stock and order lab supplies
    • Complete routine cleaning and maintenance tasks
    • Perform cage changes and cleaning
    • Assist with modifying and maintaining surgical database
    • Maintain internal records and compliance documentation
  • Continued Improvement to Surgical Service Internal Documentation:
    • Aid in writing process documentation
    • Aid in modification and maintenance of surgical database
    • Maintain internal records and compliance documentation

Skills and abilities required

  • Macro and microsurgery
  • Peri and Post-operative animal care
  • Self-starter
  • Microsoft Office software user
  • Communication skills
  • Team skills
  • Detail oriented

Bonus skills and experience

  • Surgical experience with DSI telemetry
  • Large animal surgical experience

Education and Experience and/or equivalent

  • High School or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years of relevant experience with small laboratory animals
  • Certification (SRT or SRS) through the Academy of Surgical Research is required or willingness to obtain upon hire

Physical demands

  • Ability to perform microscopic surgery
  • Sitting and standing for the majority of the day

Travel

  • Up to ~30%

Additional Information

  • Other Duties: Increase proficiency in the field and education by attending additional training for other professional development, i.e. novel surgical techniques, animal care, and welfare, etc.
  • Ensure continuing education credits are obtained to maintain certifications, i.e. ASR certifications.
