As a Senior Substation Structural Engineer, you will lead structural design engineering and analysis on substation scopes, perform research, prepare calculations, and develop recommendations for equipment and materials in accordance with Black & Veatch and industry standards. You will work within budget, project schedule, and quality requirements, and may assist with providing guidance to engineering team members. This role involves maintaining positive client relations, understanding client interests, and potentially assisting with business development activities.

You will work on cutting-edge projects involving substations, overhead and underground transmission lines, and renewables integration.

Responsibilities

  • Lead structural design engineering and analysis for substation projects.
  • Collect and assimilate data for engineering work; perform research and prepare calculations in accordance with Black & Veatch and industry standards.
  • Develop recommendations for equipment and materials selection.
  • Work within budget, project schedule, and quality requirements; provide guidance to engineering team members.
  • Maintain positive client relations and understand client interests through effective communication.
  • Assist with business development activities as needed.
  • Proactively provide guidance on department design guides, standards, systems, applicable engineering codes, and Black & Veatch policies.
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and updating engineering standards.
  • Ensure compliance with Black & Veatch quality program and provide related guidance.
  • Prepare complex engineering deliverables for multiple or mega projects; oversee data collection and management.
  • Perform complex engineering calculations and develop advanced engineering solutions to problems.
  • Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
  • Review lower-level engineering work and coordinate with internal/external team members on moderately complex and complex projects.
  • Define project schedules for single or multiple disciplines; serve as the responsible charge for a project.
  • Determine key client interests and drivers; communicate these to the project team and develop approaches to accommodate them.
  • Support business development or pursuit activities.
  • Serve as a technical specialist; provide consultation and guidance on complex technical challenges.
  • Foster knowledge management, mentoring, and innovation.
  • Assist with performance management, mentoring, recognition, and corrective actions.
  • Implement resource management strategies and manage engineering resources for small groups.
  • Ensure adherence to corporate and division programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Supervise work of others, including hiring, discipline, and pay administration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from a recognized accredited program or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 11 years of related work experience.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent engineering registration/licensure to support engineer of record (EOR) requirements.
  • Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements, including background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of structural engineering design principles and applicable design guides/standards.
  • Intermediate to advanced experience with structural steel and concrete using 3D analysis and design software (e.g., RISA 3D, STAAD Pro).
  • Foundation design experience using software such as LPile, RISA Foundation, or SP-Mats.
  • Experience performing structural connection and miscellaneous calculations using MS Excel and/or Mathcad.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to lead teams and build client relationships.
  • Experience with utility-scale electrical substations, energy, renewables, or similar fields.
  • Structural design experience for electrical substation steel structures and foundations.
  • Skills in priority setting, planning, delegation, conflict management, and team-building.
