About the role
This position offers the opportunity to apply knowledge in materials, structural analysis, structural steel design, and reinforced concrete design. You will work on a diverse range of projects involving power transmission modifications and upgrades, collaborating with clients and performing detailed design work.
Responsibilities
- Create calculations, design documents, and specifications for various projects
- Investigate, troubleshoot, and solve structural engineering issues
- Analyze and design steel frames, connections, concrete members, equipment, and foundations
- Develop integrated structural designs and perform supporting calculations
- Communicate technical information to clients and provide support documentation for structural engineering calculations
- Perform independent reviews of work performed by others, including calculations and drawing preparation
- Coordinate and guide other engineers, project managers, client personnel, and suppliers to ensure a complete and timely design
- Review existing facilities to propose upgrades and replacements, and present findings and recommendations to clients and peers
- Participate in peer-learning through sharing of knowledge with other experienced engineers
- Travel to client and vendor offices for design reviews and to substation locations for construction coordination and field verification of designs
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program
- 7+ years of experience as a practicing structural engineer, preferably on project teams designing and upgrading electrical substations
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to communicate with clients at appropriate technical levels
- Ability to perform occasional walk-downs and site visits for scoping meetings
- Experience in writing and supporting documentation for structural engineering calculations
- Proficiency in practical application of structural engineering, including analysis for structural supports, loads, and design integrity
- Experience with design techniques, tools, and principles for producing technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models
- Proficiency with relevant software such as MathCad, STAAD PRO, SAP2000, SAFE, RISA 3D, and RISA Floor
- Familiarity with design codes and standards like IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318
Qualifications
- BSCE or MSCE from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program
- Strong academic background in materials, structural analysis, structural steel design, and reinforced concrete design
- 7+ years of experience as a practicing structural engineer, preferably on project teams designing and upgrading electrical substations
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Skills
- Technically knowledgeable of practical application of structural engineering
- Experience with design techniques, tools, and principles involved in the production of technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models
- Proficiency with relevant software such as MathCad, STAAD PRO, SAP2000, SAFE, RISA 3D, and RISA Floor
- Familiarity with design codes and standards like IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI 318
- Experience in writing and providing support documentation for structural engineering calculations
- Ability to communicate effectively with clients with appropriate level of technical detail
- Experience in the design of light industrial building structures
