Senior Staff Software Engineer
Location: Remote-first (United States; BC & ON, Canada)
Full-time, permanent, exempt
About the role
As a Senior Staff Software Engineer, you will set the long-term technical vision and architecture for backend systems powering experimentation, personalization, analytics, and conversion optimization across Webflow.
- Architect and evolve high-throughput distributed systems and APIs that ingest, process, and serve large volumes of visitor and event data with low latency, high availability, and strong consistency guarantees where it matters.
- Lead foundational platform investments and the data infrastructure that supports them, unlocking new product capabilities for years to come.
- Partner closely with data scientists, ML engineers, and product engineers to productionize statistical and AI/ML capabilities into reliable, real-time backend infrastructure.
- Lead complex, multi-team, multi-quarter technical initiatives end-to-end: from problem framing and technical strategy through implementation, launch, and long-term operational ownership.
- Influence the engineering roadmap and technical strategy across the Convert pillar and partner pillars, identifying the highest-leverage investments and aligning teams behind them.
- Raise the engineering bar across the org through architecture review, technical standards, observability and operational excellence practices, and the systems and tooling that support long-term quality.
- Mentor and grow staff and senior engineers, multiplying your impact through the people you develop and the technical culture you help shape.
- Stay current with industry trends in distributed systems, experimentation platforms, real-time data, and AI/ML infrastructure, and proactively identify opportunities to advance Webflow's backend platform and engineering practices.
- Translate product vision into concrete technical problems and execution plans.
Requirements
You’ll thrive as a Senior Staff Software Engineer if you have:
- 12+ years of software engineering experience, including extensive expertise architecting and operating backend systems and distributed systems at significant scale.
- A strong technical foundation across multiple programming languages such as Python, Java, or Go, with deep fluency in modern frameworks, distributed systems patterns, and large-scale system design.
- Designed, built, and operated high-throughput, data-intensive distributed systems in production — with deep understanding of scalability, fault tolerance, consistency tradeoffs, observability, and performance optimization.
- Demonstrated technical leadership across ambiguous, cross-pillar initiatives, influencing architecture, execution, and engineering strategy well beyond your immediate team.
- Partner effectively with product, design, data science, and ML stakeholders to translate evolving business needs and customer outcomes into scalable technical solutions.
- Strong judgment, clear communication with both technical and executive audiences, and the ability to make pragmatic tradeoffs in fast-moving environments.
- A proactive embrace of AI, actively building and applying fluency in emerging technologies to elevate how we work, drive faster outcomes, and expand collective impact.
- Stay curious and open to growth.
