Responsibilities

• Independently perform Mechanical Design activities for all phases of general equipment designs for projects of moderate size and complexity.
• Generate scope estimate packages, priced equipment lists, work-hour estimates, staffing plans, and project schedule details for mechanical engineering deliverables.
• Monitor and report periodic completion progress against project schedules and budgets.
• Provide technical and schedule guidance to engineering design personnel for specific project scopes.
• Conduct performance reviews and provide feedback for engineering staff.
• Prepare basic design sketches and perform calculations in support of broader design activities for equipment, components, structures, or systems.
• Conduct field trips to existing plants to gather operating data and equipment information.
• Prepare equipment specifications, inquiry and purchase requisitions, and evaluate vendors' bids and drawings for compliance.
• Participate in the preparation of equipment lists and specialty item lists, including details for fixed and rotating equipment.
• Review design guides and specifications, and prepare equipment data sheets.
• Develop priced equipment lists for estimates and work-hour estimates for project scopes.
• Prepare project schedules for mechanical engineering tasks, including upstream/downstream ties to other disciplines.
• Progress completion of mechanical engineering tasks against the project schedule and develop staffing plans.
• Direct engineering staff to complete activities and monitor progress.
• Interpret engineering Codes and standards (e.g., ASME BPVC, API for rotating equipment).
• Apply working knowledge of welding procedures, materials selection, and nondestructive examination.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent engineering degree) from an ABET-accredited program.
• Minimum of twelve (12) years’ experience in mechanical design or a related functional area.
• Active Professional Engineer (PE) License; successful completion of NCEES PE Examination.
• Ability to obtain reciprocal Professional Licensing in additional states (preferred).
• Proficiency in engineering and design tools, including CAD software and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Experience interpreting engineering Codes and standards (e.g., ASME BPVC, API recommended practices for fixed/rotating equipment).
• Experience with equipment engineering activities for fixed and rotating equipment.
• Understanding of how engineering deliverables fit into project schedules and their impact on preceding/following activities.

Skills

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines.
• Confidence in providing direct tasking to technical staff on technical and schedule topics.
• Ability to interface with discipline leads, project managers, and clients on a daily/weekly basis.
• Comfort presenting technical and non-technical data to peers, stakeholders, clients, and design review teams.
• Skilled in interpreting and applying technical and non-technical data, including charts, graphs, design codes, and engineering theories.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
• Proficiency in mathematical concepts, including probability, statistical inference, geometry, trigonometry, and practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Moderate supervisory work required, including providing technical and schedule guidance to engineering design personnel and conducting performance reviews for assigned staff.

Travel

Less than 10% occasional travel required.

Physical Demands

• Normal office environment with moderate noise.
• Occasional field trips to operating plants or construction sites, requiring the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb, and balance.
• Clear close and distance vision, depth perception, and ability to focus.
• Lifting up to 25 pounds may be required.
