About the role
S&B is seeking a Senior Staff Lead Mechanical Engineer who independently performs mechanical design activities for all phases of general equipment designs for a project of moderate size and complexity (e.g., continuing services project involving a single engineering discipline). The role requires full competence in performing all conventional aspects of mechanical design and applying independent judgment for the evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation of standard design methods and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Generate scope estimate packages, priced equipment lists, work-hour estimates/staffing plans, and project schedule details for mechanical engineering scope deliverables.
- Monitor periodic completion progress against project schedules and budgets.
- Prepare basic design sketches and perform calculations in support of broader design activities involving equipment, components, structures, or systems.
- Conduct field trips to existing plants to gather operating data and equipment information.
- Gather data to prepare equipment specifications, inquiry and purchase requisitions for approval.
- Evaluate vendors’ bids and drawings to ensure compliance with specifications for simple equipment and specialty items.
- Participate in the preparation of equipment lists and specialty item lists, including details for simple fixed and rotating equipment.
- Review design guides and specifications, and prepare equipment data sheets.
- Develop priced equipment lists for estimates and work-hour estimates for project scopes and engineering deliverables/activities.
- Prepare project schedules for mechanical engineering tasks/deliverables, including upstream/downstream ties to other engineering disciplines’ activities.
- Direct engineering staff to complete activities and monitor progress.
- Read and interpret engineering codes and standards (e.g., ASME BPVC, API for simple rotating equipment).
- Provide technical and schedule guidance for engineering design personnel for certain project scopes.
- Provide performance feedback on engineering design personnel assigned to projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent engineering degree) from an ABET-accredited program.
- Minimum of twelve (12) years of experience in mechanical design or a related functional area.
- Considerable experience utilizing various computer software packages and automated engineering and design equipment.
- Successful completion of the NCEES PE Examination and an active Professional Engineer (PE) License.
- Ability to obtain reciprocal Professional Licensing in additional states (preferred).
Skills
- Proficiency in engineering and design tools, including common computer-aided drafting software and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Proficiency in interpreting engineering codes and standards (e.g., ASME BPVC and various API recommended practices for fixed/rotating equipment).
- Experience with equipment engineering activities for fixed and rotating equipment.
- Understanding of how engineering deliverables fit into a project schedule and their impacts on preceding and following activities.
- Preferred experience includes design sizing and specification of:
- Rotating Equipment: Centrifugal Pumps, Air Compressor Packages
- Fixed Equipment: Pressure Vessels
- HVAC/Refrigeration Packages
- Strong interpersonal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering disciplines.
- Ability to provide direct tasking to other technical staff regarding technical and schedule topics and interface with discipline leads, project managers, and clients.
- Comfort presenting technical and non-technical data to peers, stakeholders, clients, and design review teams in verbal and written formats.
- Skill in interpreting and applying technical and non-technical data, including charts, graphs, design codes, and engineering theories.
- Working knowledge of welding procedures, basic understanding of materials selection, and nondestructive examination.
