Senior/Staff Engineer - FACTS & HVDC

About the role
As part of Dominion Energy’s Electric Transmission (ET) organization, this position is responsible for providing technical focus on equipment procurement, Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC), lifecycle management, and field engineering activities involving Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC). This role supports STATCOMs, SVCs, and Fixed Series Capacitors (FSCs) deployed on the system, requiring continual maintenance, troubleshooting, and engineering support across multiple organizations. Additionally, this role will support new STATCOMs and a HVDC line currently in design, engineering, and procurement. Dominion Energy is building the first HVDC line in Virginia and within PJM’s footprint. The role also involves developing asset management criteria and documentation of engineering and design requirements for substation equipment and turn-key projects associated with FACTS and HVDC.
Responsibilities
- Provide subject matter expertise to FACTS and HVDC equipment programs, collaborating with System planning, asset management, procurement, and transmission expansion teams to align with strategic objectives.
- Collaborate on solutions to complex, cross-disciplinary engineering challenges within Electric Transmission, emphasizing integration of FACTS and HVDC systems into the existing AC transmission network.
- Own the lifecycle of FACTS and/or HVDC equipment—from developing technical requirements and running Requests for Proposals to supporting Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), installation planning, and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
- Assist with performance monitoring, warranty management, technical issue resolution, and partnership development.
- Drive engagement with key Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), EPC contractors, and technology vendors specializing in FACTS and HVDC systems.
- Provide technical input to standardization efforts for EPC projects involving specialized substation, FACTS, and HVDC systems to ensure consistent design, constructability, maintainability, and reliability.
- Support existing FACTS Real-time digital simulator (RTDS) replicas and upcoming HVDC replicas in the laboratory to understand how control logic changes impact field behavior.
- Identify, evaluate, and apply innovative technologies to address FACTS and HVDC equipment challenges, improve performance, reduce risk, and enhance operational flexibility.
- Create and present training materials, standards, and operational guidelines for Operations and Field organizations regarding maintenance procedures and response protocols for FACTS and HVDC systems.
- Contribute expertise to FACTS and HVDC spare and critical material strategies, including spare need assessments, risk-based spare sizing, lifecycle obsolescence planning, and collaboration with supply chain teams.
- Provide in-field support through on-site or remote means to facilitate vendor-governed maintenance or Substation/ETFO support.
- Facilitate technical collaboration and partnerships with universities, research organizations, engineering firms, and government agencies to advance technical capabilities and industry best practices.
- Represent Dominion Energy in external technical and industry forums such as PJM committees, EPRI, CIGRE, IEEE, and peer utility working groups, contributing to discussions on FACTS, HVDC, and advanced transmission equipment.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Requirements
- Senior Engineer: 5+ years of relevant engineering experience.
- Staff Engineer: 8+ years of relevant engineering experience.
- Advanced Electrical Engineering degrees may be considered in calculation of years of directly related experience.
- Experience supporting or maintaining substation equipment or equipment manufacturing is desired.
- Research or field experience supporting FACTS devices such as STATCOMs, SVC, Fixed Series Capacitors, or HVDC is a plus.
- Experience with electromagnetic transient (EMT) power system software and hardware-in-the-loop is preferred (e.g., RSCAD, PSCAD, EMTP).
- Strong knowledge of engineering theories, principles, standards, codes, and their application to problem-solving.
- Strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including technical writing.
- Supplier relations management experience.
- Proficiency in computer applications and engineering calculations using software programs (e.g., Excel).
- Ability to work independently or in a team environment, process information quickly, and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Strong planning, organizational, and project management skills.
- Thorough knowledge of transmission and substation equipment, design concepts, and industry standards.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (required).
- Preferred advanced degrees: Doctorate or Master's in Electrical Engineering. Advanced degrees may be considered in calculation of years of directly related experience.
- Upcoming engineering PhD graduates with a projected graduation date no later than August 31, 2026, who meet the engineering criteria, will be considered.
Required Engineering Criteria for placement in the Engineer job series:
- 4-year engineering degree from an ABET-accredited Engineering program, or
- 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside the U.S. accredited through the Washington Accord as a full signatory, or
- 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math, or Engineering Technology, plus a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited, or
- Valid U.S. Professional Engineer license (current or previous).

Pay
Expected Hiring Base Salary Range:
- Senior Engineer: $90,900 – $118,100
- Staff Engineer: $90,900 – $118,100
The actual salary offered may vary based on qualifications, skills, experience, and work location.
Schedule
Hybrid 3-2 work schedule: three days in the office, two days of teleworking.
