The Senior Staff Controls Engineer will lead software and hardware design for new product controls, contribute to the SMART controls strategy and roadmap, and execute controls development initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in New Product Introduction (NPI) project teams as the Controls representative and lead NPI Controls projects.
  • Translate product requirements into controls software and hardware design documents that meet functional, quality, and cost targets.
  • Propose and present optimal controls solutions for each NPI specification.
  • Design systems to control fan motors, pumps, valves, safety switches, heating elements, and sensors with data communication for BAC units, building management systems, and cloud integration.
  • Develop and execute controls system verification and validation plans.
  • Collaborate with product platform teams and controls panel suppliers to create panel drawings, wiring diagrams, bills of material, and system configurators.
  • Evaluate and qualify vendors and technical proposals to achieve cost and quality targets.
  • Lead cross-functional discussions to communicate and align on controls technical decisions.
  • Define and document ‘best practice’ rules for customer software development based on project lessons learned.
  • Establish testing procedures, define pass criteria, participate in lab testing, and analyze data to optimize product performance.
  • Promote standardization across business functions for software development and testing on controls systems.
  • Identify and implement product improvements and cost-out opportunities through NPI or sustaining projects.
  • Write Controls-related Engineering Change Notices (ECN) for design or software documentation changes.
  • Support field issues and work to meet customer expectations.
  • Prepare and present Controls-related technical training across the organization.
  • Propose and present Controls Strategy and implementation plans to Technology/Product Strategy teams.
  • Identify opportunities to increase Controls development velocity and quality.
  • Learn, apply, and stay current with regulatory codes and standards (e.g., IEC, NEC, UL, FM) in global markets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related discipline; advanced degree or P.E. preferred.
  • 8+ years of engineering experience with technical project management, including at least 2 years in new product development.
  • 5+ years of experience developing electro-mechanical control systems; HVAC control systems experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in technical writing, including controls/software specifications, test plans, and execution.
  • Familiarity with software languages such as C/C++, Structured Text, and other PLC languages; Modicon, Beckhoff, or Carel experience preferred.
  • Experience with integrated communications via BMS protocols like BACNet and Modbus.
  • Demonstrated capability with Microsoft Office, VBA, and AutoCAD; GitHub experience a plus.
  • Previous experience in laboratory testing, including instrumentation and measurement techniques.

Working Conditions

  • Regular standing and walking (up to 50% of the time).
  • Occasional lifting up to 30 pounds.
  • Domestic and international travel up to 25% of the time.

Pay

$90,000 to $154,100 annually.
