Senior Staff Controls Engineer
About the Role
The Senior Staff Controls Engineer performs advanced system maintenance and support, leads complex projects using internal and external resources, and assists with the development and implementation of policies and procedures. This role requires effective interaction with various teams, including design engineering, site engineering, regional operations, and external vendors, to resolve complex matters.
Responsibilities
- System Operation and Work Practices: Expert operating knowledge of control systems, including advanced diagnostics and repairs. Apply Equinix processes, procedures, and industry standards to resolve complex issues. Utilize and ensure safe working practices, such as lockout/tagout and MSDS understanding.
- Problem Solving: Consistently solve complex, cross-functional issues requiring independent action and initiative. Implement and recommend system-level enhancements to eliminate potential problems. Test suitability of components for deployments on complex assignments.
- Internal/External Contact: Mentor junior team members and direct internal and external project teams, including general contractors, design teams, commissioning agents, and equipment suppliers. Communicate effectively across functions, including SOP development and technical writing, with executive-level interactions.
- Technical Expertise: Thorough understanding of advanced electrical, fire protection, and HVAC systems, including optimization strategies. Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for controls systems, rapidly comprehend new systems, and develop and execute projects. Review budgets, calculate savings, and understand server operating systems, networks, and cybersecurity best practices.
- Training: Expand knowledge through system experience, vendor training, industry participation, and shadowing. Act as an SME for multiple systems and train others inside and outside the group.
- Develop Policy/Methods: Participate in the review and development of policy and procedure documents.
- Assess Adherence to Policy: Ensure adherence to standards and policies through documentation review, commissioning activities, and data center physicals.
Qualifications
- Typically 5+ years in control system design, operations, maintenance, and project planning, with a focus on controls.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Controls, Mechatronics, or related discipline preferred.
- Experience in highly automated environments (automotive, semiconductors, high-volume manufacturing) and Data Center Technical Engineering and Operations support preferred.
- Knowledge of electrical and HVAC control systems, PLC troubleshooting, and programming.
- Ability to lead complex system troubleshooting, upgrades, commissioning, and vendor evaluation.
Pay
The targeted pay range for this position in the following locations is:
- United States - DC6 Washington DC: 130,000 - 194,000 USD / Annual
- United States - DA6 Dallas: 118,000 - 176,000 USD / Annual
- United States - NY4 New York City: 130,000 - 194,000 USD / Annual
Our pay ranges reflect the minimum and maximum target for new hire pay, determined by role, level, and location. Individual pay is based on job-related skills, experience, and relevant education/training. The range listed reflects base pay only and does not include bonus, equity, or benefits.
