About the role
The Senior Staff Accountant position requires an onsite schedule, though candidates from certain states may be considered for remote and/or hybrid arrangements.
Responsibilities
- Researches and recommends appropriate accounting treatments for complex transactions.
- Optimizes end-to-end financial processes and maintains documentation of accounting procedures and technical approaches.
- Develops related policies and procedural documents and educates staff and management on financial matters.
- Facilitates the growth and development of Staff Accountants by assigning tasks, reviewing work products, assisting with training, onboarding new team members, researching problems, and providing resolutions.
- Communicates with relevant internal and external parties on financial matters and provides direction to work groups.
- Maintains comprehensive knowledge of Carilion's financial processes, policies, and systems.
- Prepares and reviews complex financial documentation and communications, including supporting schedules and financial reports.
- Interfaces and collaborates with other Carilion departments to improve process efficiencies and integrate operational and patient data systems with ERP or financial systems.
- Assists with new accounting software system implementations or upgrades, including design and testing.
- Applies advanced knowledge to assist in the correct mapping between operational and patient data systems and accounting systems.
- Develops and maintains databases to assist in appropriate financial classification within the accounting systems.
- Stays updated with accounting literature and developments in authoritative standards and interpretations.
- Provides in-depth analysis of income statements and balance sheets on a monthly, quarterly, and yearly basis.
- Projects depreciation expense for all Carilion affiliates and assists other areas and managers as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or Master's degree in Accounting or Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting, required.
- 6-10 years of experience in the Accounting field, required.
- CMA or CPA designation or exam qualification preferred but not required.
- Must be able to understand interrelationships of a multi-company environment and maintain a client service approach while considering the system's interests.
- Requires general knowledge of PCs and office equipment, excellent working knowledge of computerized accounting systems, spreadsheet and word processing software, with Microsoft Windows/Excel/Word preferred.
- Excellent writing, interpersonal, and analytical skills are essential.
