Position Summary

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Radiology is seeking a Senior Sonographer to perform advanced ultrasound procedures across multiple specialty areas. Working under limited supervision, this role utilizes state-of-the-art imaging technology, educates patients about examination procedures, monitors patient well-being during exams, and serves as a resource for students and staff by providing instruction on ultrasound techniques and equipment operation.

Position Responsibilities

  • Performs complex diagnostic ultrasonography procedures including imaging and Doppler.
  • Provides instruction to trainees, students and other medical staff on operation and safety precautions.
  • Consults with the interpreting physician regarding the ultrasound exam findings.
  • Documents exam information as required by departmental standards.
  • Evaluates images of ultrasound exams and determine if the exam is of diagnostic quality.
  • Affords ultrasound guidance for intraoperative and invasive procedures.
  • Provides information and instructions to patient, patient’s family or others, regarding the nature of requested diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures.
  • Performs patient care techniques including skin preparation, vital sign monitoring and recording, and basic life support; prepare and administer contrast material to patients.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.
  • Instructs and evaluate sonography students on the operation of diagnostic equipment.
  • Instructs medical residents on operation of diagnostic equipment.
  • Maintains quality control with the ultrasound section in accordance with accepted departmental standards.
  • Determines equipment malfunctions and contact repair service.
  • Performs equipment calibration and sterilization as prescribed by standard accepted methods of operation.

Education Requirements

  • Completion of one of the following pathways:
    • Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited or equivalent program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography or Vascular Technology,
    • Completion of a two-year or more accredited health science program (i.e. Radiologic Technology, Medical Technology, Nursing, etc.) plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography,
    • Completion of a bachelor’s degree plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Radiation Sciences or other Allied Health Sciences discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; a bachelor’s degree in Radiation Sciences is highly desirable.

Certification Requirements

  • Requires registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers within nine (9) months following the start of employment.
  • Requires registration in Abdomen.
  • Desirable Qualifications: Registration in Vascular and OB/GYN specialty areas.
