Senior Software Safety / Senior System Safety Engineer
About the role
The System Safety team at RTX is dedicated to ensuring the safety of our products, particularly for our warfighters. This role involves developing and implementing system safety programs, analyzing software and firmware, collaborating with various stakeholders, and interfacing with other engineering functions.
Responsibilities
- Developing and implementing one or more MIL-STD-882E compliant system safety programs involving management (task series 100), analysis (task series 200), evaluation (task series 300), and verification (task series 400).
- Analyze engineering software and/or firmware in accordance with MIL-STD-882E, JSSSEH, AOP-52, and other relevant standards.
- Work with software development teams to review and analyze software code.
- Collaborate with Program Management and government approval authorities from program startup through deployment to gain concurrence with software builds.
- Affiliate with Software and/or Firmware analyses.
- Participate in the execution of the Software System Safety Program.
- Interface with various stakeholders, including customers, program offices, subcontractors, and vendors.
- Affiliate with the preparation of Safety Assessment Reports and Safety Program Briefs for customer approval.
- Affiliate with software safety technical reviews.
- Interpret system requirements, customer specifications, and military standards.
- Collaborate across multiple disciplines to gain a comprehensive understanding of product architecture and design.
- Prepare internal and customer reports describing various analyses relevant to the System Safety program.
- Collaborate across multiple disciplines to gain a full understanding of product architecture and design.
- Interface with other engineering functions: Systems Engineering, Software or Firmware Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Hardware Engineering.
- Manage System Safety Working Group(s) between key Raytheon and Customer representatives.
- Affiliate with Special Access Program(s).
Qualifications
- Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience.
- Experience with System Safety Engineering, System Engineering, Software or Firmware Engineering, or Safety Engineering experience in Aerospace, Automotive or Medical Device.
- Experience with risk assessment concepts, such as those included in MIL-STD 882E / DO-178.
- Experience developing and implementing MIL-STD-882E System Safety Program tasks and analyses, involving management (task series 100), analysis (task series 200), evaluation (task series 300), and verification (task series 400). This includes hardware and software safety related tasks.
- Experience with DoD System Safety Programs e.g. MIL-STD-882 / DO-178.
- Experience with system and software safety implementation in Agile Development environment.
- Experience with Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) and Proposal Development.
- Experience interfacing with Human Systems Integration showcasing execution of Human Factors Engineering tasking involving MIL-STD-1472.
- Experience interfacing with other engineering functions: Systems Engineering, Software or Firmware Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience with Engineering Change Proposals, Engineering Review Boards, System Safety Working Groups.
