Senior Software Engineers - Help Address Homelessness by Joining Our Small Team of Experienced IT Volunteers (Flutter, Node.js, Google Cloud)
About Anything Helps
Anything Helps is a Washington State 501(c)(3) providing Medicaid funded case management to people experiencing homelessness across King, Snohomish, Pierce and Kitsap counties. We are led by and staffed with people who have experienced homelessness, and our case managers work in the field, meeting people where they are. Our executive director sets the organizational priorities and our volunteer IT lead makes the technical calls.
Who You'd Work With
Nearly all of our technology is built by two amazing volunteers: a retired software engineer who has built and run our automation stack since 2024, and a retired university professor who specializes in AI. If you have spent a career around good engineers and you miss the company, or you miss contributing your skills to a team working on a project, that is what this opportunity is offering.
About This Opportunity
This is an ongoing skills-based volunteer opportunity, fully remote, from anywhere in the United States. A contracted team has built the first version of a Flutter app with a TypeScript and Node.js backend on Firebase Firestore and Google Cloud. It replaces the hodgepodge of SaaS products we have taped together over the years, and its job is to strip the red tape out of getting a person housed and employed: eligibility, enrollment, authorizations, documentation and billing, nearly all of which is still done by hand across this sector. Every hour it saves is an hour a case manager can spend face-to-face with someone living outside.
We also intend to offer the finished product to other nonprofits that address homelessness. That would strengthen the entire response system, giving them the same advantages we have built for ourselves and reducing what they would otherwise spend on the larger medical software platforms. It would also create unrestricted revenue for Anything Helps, keeping our programs driven by what our clients need rather than by what grants fund.
What We're Looking For
- A career's worth of judgment and applied knowledge. If you have shipped production software and lived through your architecture decisions, you are the ideal candidate whether you are still working or long retired.
- Current Flutter, Dart or Firebase experience is not required. Our current volunteers both came from other languages and other decades and were useful within their first week.
- Beyond the technical part, we are looking for people who will object out loud to an idea they think is wrong, propose alternatives, contribute feedback, and say plainly if their skills would do more good somewhere else in the organization. If you see something here you would rather work on, say so, even if you have never done it and simply want to learn it by doing. We would rather have you engaged for years than assigned for months.
Anything Helps is both our name and our approach to the work.
To Apply
Send us a short message about your background and which parts of this project interest you most. We will set up a call to talk through the details and figure out how to get started. We can only accept volunteers currently living in the USA due to the app's HIPAA requirements.
