Senior Software Engineer, UxS
About The Role
Somewear’s software platform and satellite-powered hardware enable commercial and government teams to maintain situational awareness during high-pressure operations — in any environment. From the Arctic to the Indo-Pacific, Somewear’s technology is trusted by those operating on the edge of connectivity to keep teams in touch, informed, and safe. Our mission is to save lives by enabling critical communications for the world’s most important teams. We’re expanding our technology to new areas, including unmanned systems, sensors, new satellite constellations, and more diverse networks. We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to drive the development and integration of software and system capabilities across the UxS ecosystem. This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of systems engineering, distributed software, networking, and field operations. You will define requirements, drive architecture decisions, and work hands-on with engineering teams to deliver reliable capabilities from early definition through deployment.
Responsibilities
- Lead system-level design for UxS-related capabilities, with a focus on end-to-end workflows spanning vehicle, GCS, networking, and operator experience.
- Design, develop, and optimize ground control software that enables Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) communication with UAVs and other autonomous platforms.
- Define requirements and interfaces between GCS software, vehicle payloads, radios/network links, and cloud/relay services.
- Partner with software and hardware teams to integrate, test, and deploy capabilities in realistic environments.
- Work directly with customer technical teams to plan integrations, support deployments, and troubleshoot issues in the field.
- Create and maintain system documentation, diagrams, and test plans that enable repeatable deployments.
Requirements
- Worked 5+ years in software engineering shipping complex technical products.
- Direct experience in the UxS ecosystem, especially building or integrating ground control station (GCS) software.
- Proficient in Kotlin or similar strongly typed languages.
- Comfortable contributing to other parts of the stack.
- Comfortable working across Unix and Windows environments, plus strong security best practices.
- Able to translate ambiguous operational needs into clear requirements and deliverables.
- Able to own projects end-to-end, from concept to deployed capability.
- Exposure to open-source UAV software systems (e.g. PX4, Ardupilot, Mission Planner, QGroundControl, etc.) is a plus.
Qualifications
We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
Skills
- Strong understanding of software engineering principles and practices.
- Experience with distributed systems, networking, and embedded systems.
- Knowledge of UAV/UAS systems, ground control stations, and related technologies.
- Experience with Kotlin or similar strongly typed languages.
- Experience with open-source UAV software systems (e.g. PX4, Ardupilot, Mission Planner, QGroundControl, etc.).
