Senior Software Engineer, Site Performance

The CNN Site Performance team leverages innovative technologies and best practices to enhance our products' loading times, responsiveness, and overall speed. From fine-tuning server configurations to optimizing code and assets, our expertise ensures that our platform is always at its peak performance.
As a Senior Software Engineer on CNN's Site Performance Team, you will make significant contributions to enhancing the performance and user experience of one of the world's leading news and media platforms. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to optimize site performance, focusing on speed, responsiveness, and scalability. You will identify and address bottlenecks in code, databases, and infrastructure to ensure lightning-fast page load times and smooth user interactions.
This position will also involve using and implementing monitoring and analytics tools to track and analyze site performance metrics. You will utilize data-driven insights to proactively identify performance issues, make informed decisions, and continuously improve the platform.
Responsibilities
- Work primarily in modern JavaScript using AWS (Amazon Web Services)
- Contribute to code and architecture reviews, championing best practices for the organization by defining and evolving engineering standards
- Engage in strong inter-team and cross-team communication
- Follow a progressive development methodology, moving from proofs of concept to prototypes to production releases
- Demonstrate passion for software engineering with a strong sense of ownership
- Work in Agile methodologies for organized and distributed work within the team
- Review group or company level priorities (such as OKRs), breaking down problems into meaningful tasks and solutions while working with peers within the team and cross-functionally across the organization
Requirements
- 5+ years of experience working with other developers on a production system
- 5+ years of experience with JavaScript, including ES6/7 and asynchronous JavaScript
- Experience with performance monitoring and analytics tools like Datadog, New Relic, or similar
- Deep industry experience with modern development technologies, and hands-on familiarity with both client and server technology
- Solid understanding of common software data structures and algorithms
- Understanding of the constraints of working with a growing team and thrive in a fast-paced environment
