About Flock
Every community deserves to be safe—it’s a fundamental right. Flock builds technology that reduces crime and protects privacy, partnering with cities, businesses, schools, and neighborhoods to help protect where people live, work, and play. Last year, Flock technology supported over 1 million criminal investigations, helped solve approximately 20% of reported crimes in deployed areas, and played a role in locating more than 10,000 missing people. We are a high-performance team united by urgency, ownership, and a shared commitment to meaningful impact. With over $1B in funding and an $8.3B valuation, we are scaling intentionally and investing in the people who will help us build what others said could not be done.
About the Role
Flock Safety is looking for a frontend-focused, Senior Software Engineer to join our Search team. Search is one of the most critical features at Flock—it’s the tool our customers rely on every day to follow leads, identify patterns, and help keep their communities safer. In this role, your focus will be heavily frontend-leaning (around 90%), but you'll maintain the full-stack context needed to build seamless end-to-end features. You'll work on a high-traffic production system where the quality of your work has a direct impact on outcomes that matter. We need someone who cares as much about how something looks and feels as how it works, and who holds themselves and their teammates to a high standard.
You’ll champion the frontend architecture across a complex React/TypeScript/Node stack, collaborating closely with backend engineers, product, and design to shape the future of the Search experience.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain high-quality frontend features using React and TypeScript, ensuring a seamless user experience.
- Collaborate with backend engineers, product, and design teams to build end-to-end features in a high-traffic production system.
- Champion frontend architecture and best practices across a complex stack (React, TypeScript, Node).
- Work with mapping libraries (e.g., Mapbox, Google Maps API) and complex data visualizations on maps.
- Contribute to Node.js/Express web services and API design (REST, GraphQL, gRPC).
- Participate in code reviews, mentorship, and on-call rotations.
- Identify and suggest improvements to systems and architecture.
- Lead technical discussions, demos, or retrospectives.
- Serve as a technical point person for core Search features and propose solutions to user experience problems.
Requirements
- 5+ years of professional software development experience, with deep expertise in modern frontend web technologies, design patterns, and user interface design using React and TypeScript.
- Experience with mapping libraries (e.g., Mapbox, Google Maps API) and/or complex data visualizations on maps.
- Comfort working with Node.js/Express for web services and a solid understanding of API design (REST, GraphQL, gRPC).
- Familiarity with core backend microservice concepts, including basic SQL (PostgreSQL or similar) and client-service communication.
- Resourceful problem-solver mindset, excelling in ambiguous situations and taking initiative.
- Growth mindset with a love for coding and excitement about working on a fast-paced, evolving product.
Nice to Have
- Familiarity with AWS managed services (e.g., S3, API Gateway, SNS/SQS).
- Experience optimizing frontend performance for high-traffic, data-heavy applications.

First 60 Days
- Take on larger tasks spanning multiple repositories with increasing independence.
- Identify and suggest improvements to our systems and architecture based on what you've learned.
- Prioritize thorough PR reviews and lead at least one team-facing discussion (tech talk, demo, or retro item).
- Participate in customer calls and start on-call rotations.
90 Days and Beyond
- Represent the Search team on a cross-functional project and communicate progress back to your manager and teammates.
