Senior Software Engineer (MCP Servers)
About the role
Cotality is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design, build, and scale next-generation platforms that power AI-enabled applications across our enterprise. This role involves translating business needs into scalable technical solutions, influencing architecture, engineering practices, and platform strategy.
Responsibilities
Design, develop, and enhance complex software systems that enable scalable and secure AI integrations.
Lead the architecture and implementation of MCP servers to expose internal APIs and datasets for AI applications and agent-based workflows.
Develop and manage Apigee X API proxies, optimizing API lifecycle management, security, and performance.
Translate high-level requirements into detailed technical specifications, system designs, and implementation approaches.
Partner with product owners and business stakeholders to define requirements, focusing on AI integration capabilities and API exposure strategies.
Evaluate technical feasibility and recommend solutions considering scalability, system constraints, and time-to-market.
Drive best practices for AI context delivery, API governance, and cross-platform integration.
Define testing strategies and collaborate with QA and engineering teams to elevate overall testing maturity.
Develop and enhance testing approaches for MCP server security and access control, context retrieval accuracy and latency optimization, Apigee X policy effectiveness and API performance.
Write comprehensive unit, integration, and system-level tests to ensure reliability and scalability.
Provide support for complex production issues, including AI context pipeline failures and MCP integrations, API gateway traffic patterns and anomalies within Apigee X, and troubleshoot and resolve escalated incidents using a systems-level perspective.
Recommend enhancements to improve system resilience, scalability, and performance.
Influence and advance engineering processes, including MCP server deployment and lifecycle management, API proxy development standards within Apigee X, CI/CD pipelines and automation practices.
Research and evaluate emerging technologies across AI ecosystems and agent frameworks, MCP standards and related SDKs, modern API management platforms, and apply and socialize new approaches, driving continuous innovation across the team.
Mentor and guide junior engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
Communicate progress, risks, and blockers transparently to maintain delivery momentum.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, related technical field or equivalent work experience.
5+ years of relevant work experience in software development.
Strong proficiency in software development principles and methodologies.
Proficiency in Python, JavaScript/Node.js, Java.
Comprehension of the MCP architecture and the client-server communication model.
Familiarity with general API concepts, as well as specific transport mechanisms like HTTP APIs, gRPC, and WebSocket streaming.
The ability to build servers that expose tools, create resources for direct data access, and formulate prompts for pre-defined workflows.
Experience testing and debugging servers utilizing the MCP Inspector.
Implementing OAuth authentication for clients.
Designing, building, and maintaining robust API proxies.
Design and Scripting: Proficiency in RESTful API design, alongside experience with Node.js and JavaScript.
Security Policy Implementation: Mastering the implementation of security policies, including OAuth, JSON Web Tokens (JWTs), API keys, and data masking to hide sensitive data.
Traffic Management: Customizing policies to handle traffic effectively, utilizing tools like Spike Arrest to limit the rate of API calls.
Backend Integration: Orchestrating complex workflows by integrating Apigee with multiple backend services, databases, and third-party platforms.
Google Cloud Ecosystem: Using service accounts and Google Authentication to safely access backend services from Apigee proxies.
API Documentation: Documenting APIs utilizing OpenAPI specifications.
DevOps and CI/CD: Familiarity with continuous integration and continuous deployment tools, such as Jenkins, Git, and Maven.
Analytics and Monitoring: Using Apigee's analytics tools to monitor traffic, detect anomalies, and understand API usage patterns.
API Productization: Packaging and productizing APIs using API products and developer portals.
Experience creating class and sequence diagrams from high and low-level designs.
Demonstrated ability to write clean, efficient code for scalable and flexible applications.
Expertise in software testing methodologies and writing programmatic tests.
Proven track record of delivering components for larger functional areas or applications.
Strong problem-solving skills for investigating and fixing software bugs.
Experience mentoring junior colleagues and sharing technical knowledge.
Benefits
Annual Pay Range: 128,700 - 160,000 USD
