Senior Software Engineer (Java) - Bank Payments

About the role

Adyen provides payments, data, and financial products in a single solution for customers like Meta, Uber, H&M, and Microsoft. The North American Bank Payments team drives innovation within the region's core banking rails, focusing on high-volume payment methods such as ACH and EFT Pre-Authorized Debits (PADs) for Canada. The team is executing a major strategic transition of merchants to a new acquirer under Adyen's U.S. Bank license to unlock new features and manages cutting-edge Pay by Bank solutions using Open Banking features via partners like Plaid.

Responsibilities

• Bring your own point of view on best engineering practices.
• Collaborate across teams and time zones to deliver projects.
• Lead complex technical projects from requirements analysis through design, implementation, testing, and launch into production.
• Contribute hands-on to implementation while providing technical guidance and mentoring to other engineers.
• Identify and improve parts of the platform to enhance robustness and scalability.
• Write code used at scale, adopting a mindset for high-volume systems.
• Launch fast and iterate often; within your first few weeks, you will deliver live functionalities impacting merchants and shoppers.

Requirements

• At least 8 years of professional experience as an engineer, currently working as a Senior Software Engineer or at a similar level.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
• Flexible, team-oriented, and detail-oriented.
• Familiarity with complex, large-scale distributed systems.
• Open to some domestic and international travel.

Qualifications

• Demonstrated knowledge of building Java-based web services (RESTful, SOAP).
• Experience designing performant database models in PostgreSQL or other relational databases.
• Knowledge of software architecture paradigms such as event-driven or message queueing systems.

Pay

The annual base salary range for this role is $180,000 - $243,000.

Schedule

This role is based in our Chicago office with a hybrid workplace model. In-person collaboration is valued, and the company does not offer remote-only roles.

Candidates must be work authorized in the United States without the need for new visa sponsorship. The company can support visa transfers but will not sponsor individuals for H-1B CAP applications.
