Senior Software Engineer-Backend
About the role
The Senior Backend Engineer on the Sales Engineering team at Scout Motors will build and maintain backend services that power the entire customer vehicle purchase journey. This includes trade-in and vehicle configuration, finance, leasing, and delivery processes. The role involves integrating with third-party providers and working closely with product managers, designers, and partner teams to ensure that the systems meet real user needs.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain backend services across the customer purchase journey
- Write clean, well-tested, production-quality code
- Design and implement APIs, data models, and service logic
- Integrate with third-party providers such as valuation services, lender platforms, logistics APIs, and factory systems
- Apply sound engineering patterns to distributed systems
- Take ownership of features from scoping and design through implementation, testing, deployment, and monitoring
- Participate in code and design reviews
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and partner teams
- Contribute to improving team practices
- Use AI-assisted development tools to increase velocity and share practices
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field
- 5+ years of software development experience, focusing on back-end technologies
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
- Proficiency in one of Go, Node.js, Python, Java, or Ruby
- Experience with both relational and/or non-relational databases
- Experience with identity management systems and directory services
Qualifications
- Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and best practices
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
Skills
- Experience building AI/ML platform foundations or developer AI tooling
- Experience in automotive, mobility, retail, ecommerce, or digital consumer products
- Experience building multi-tenant platforms and shared enterprise services

Pay
Initial base salary range: $140,000.00 - $170,000.00
Initial California base salary range: $154,000 - $187,000
Schedule
The role is based out of a Scout Motors location in Fremont, California. This role requires 1 day per week in the office, with regular in-person meetings and events. Applicants should expect that the role will require the ability to convene with Scout colleagues in person and travel to participate in events on behalf of the company from time to time.
