Senior Software Engineer

About the role

The Information Technology department invites applications for a full-time Senior Software Engineer to join the Reliability Technologies team. This role involves full-stack development, including front-end, back-end, and database work, and participation in all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle. The Senior Software Engineer will research new technologies, mentor other developers, collaborate with Project Managers, and serve as a Subject Matter Expert for assigned applications. This position includes participation in a 24x7x365 on-call support rotation for production applications.

Responsibilities

• Apply technical knowledge and experience to solve architecture and design problems.
• Drive discussions with Business Analysts and Business Partners to interpret high-level business requirements into detailed application requirements.
• Create software design specifications for functionality defined in approved requirement specifications, ensuring consistency with NYISO software development standards and architectural blueprints.
• Evaluate and incorporate new technologies and tools to enhance the product development process.
• Present technology designs and related issues to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Document product architecture plans.
• Design and develop technical testing methods to meet scalability and performance objectives, including tuning applications that do not meet requirements.
• Lead projects with assistance from management and provide high visibility across teams.
• Mentor and coach Associate Engineers and Engineers.
• Serve as a subject matter expert for supported applications across the organization.
• Provide software expertise and support for all phases of the software development lifecycle, including requirements, design, development, testing, deployment, and post-production support.
• Interact with Project Managers to provide task estimates, work breakdown structures, feasibility advice, and project status updates.
• Manage resource allocations for Software Engineers on the project team and track their progress.
• Perform software development activities to support NYISO’s mission and business objectives, including creating or refactoring software programs as defined in approved specifications.
• Create automated unit and functional tests to ensure software changes are reasonably free from defects.
• Provide post-production application support, including consultation, problem identification, data analysis, and emergency repairs.
• Resolve customer inquiries and respond to suggestions for improvement and enhancements.
• Develop user interfaces for web-based applications, incorporating best practices and NYISO standards for usability and design.
• Create and review mockups with Business Partners as necessary.
• Incorporate industry and NYISO best practices for web application security into all software design and development work.
• Review and address web application security issues identified by secure SDLC tooling.
• Participate in penetration-testing of NYISO-developed applications and create mitigation plans for supported applications.
• Collaborate with third-party vendors to support and troubleshoot issues in their applications, updating internal documentation as necessary.
• Ensure the project team follows guidelines for source code management and collaborate with the Release and Control team during code deployments.
• Take ownership of application code, lead code reviews, and suggest changes to improve performance, security, maintainability, or standards compliance.
• Design, create, and update database tables, SQL, and PL/SQL statements used by applications.
• Instrument and tune existing database tables and queries.
• Collaborate with other Software Engineering and IT teams to manage changes to supported applications and resolve configuration, deployment, or environmental issues.
• Perform data profiling to ensure application performance targets and database capacity needs are met.
• Partner with management in strategic planning for supported applications, including creating and updating roadmap documentation for technology upgrades and usability enhancements.
• Participate in continuous learning to improve technical skills as required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Information Systems.
• Seven years of software development experience in a multi-dimensional team setting.
• Experience with Java, JavaScript, and SQL.
• Experience leveraging AI-assisted software development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, M365 Copilot, AI-powered code analysis, and testing tools) to improve developer productivity, code quality, and delivery efficiency.
• Knowledge of AI-generated code review and validation practices.
• Demonstrated ability to identify, evaluate, and implement AI and automation opportunities that improve operational efficiency, system reliability, software quality, or business processes.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
• Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints from market participants, regulatory agencies, or business community members.
• Ability to write clear technical documentation conforming to prescribed style and format.
• Ability to present information effectively to top management, public groups, and boards of directors.
• Ability to comprehend and apply principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory.
• Ability to work with concepts such as limits, rings, quadratic and differential equations, and proofs of theorems.
• Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
• Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (e.g., formulas, scientific equations, graphs) in its most complex phases.
• Intermediate competency in the Windows operating environment using MS Office applications, email, and internet programs.

Qualifications

• Energy/Utility industry experience desired.
• Experience with cloud development platforms (AWS, Docker, Kubernetes) desired.
• Oracle PL/SQL experience desired.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

• SANS Security Awareness training or equivalent desired.
• GIAC Secure Software Programmer – Java certification desired.

Work Environment

• Hybrid work arrangement: onsite at the Rensselaer, NY location several days per week, with the option to work remotely on remaining days. Availability to respond to business needs may require increased onsite presence.

Pay

Salary Range: $105,700 - $176,400 USD
