The Role

We're hiring a Senior Software Engineer to join a small, experienced engineering team. This is a hands-on IC role. Your typical week will include writing code (and tests), reviewing others' code and helping them make it better, improving our review processes and tooling, and building the APIs and business logic that power our telehealth platform. You'll primarily work on the backend, but we're looking for engineers who are comfortable working across the full stack as the lines between frontend and backend continue to blur.

What we're looking for

  • 5+ years building and running production web applications. You've shipped real things to real users and kept them running.
  • Strong Python experience, preferably with 3.8+. Django and Django REST Framework experience is strongly preferred, but deep experience with similar frameworks counts.
  • Comfort working across the stack. You're backend-first, but you're not the kind of engineer who stops at the API boundary. Familiarity with JavaScript, React, or Next.js is a plus; willingness to work in them is a requirement.
  • AI fluency. You have used AI tools, and have opinions about when they work and why they don’t. You actively use, or are eager to adopt, AI coding tools in your workflow. You can review AI-generated code critically and know that "it works" isn't the same as "it's correct."
  • Strong code review instincts. You write clear, constructive feedback. You catch real problems without nitpicking style. You understand that code review is as much about raising the team's standards as it is about catching bugs.
  • Clear communication. You're able to work compassionately and effectively via Slack and video with teammates of diverse backgrounds and varying experience levels. You know when to ask for help.
  • Comfort with healthcare subject matter. Our platform deals directly with sexual health, HIV prevention, and STI care. You should be comfortable with frank medical discussions and motivated by the impact this work has on patients, especially those in underserved populations.
  • Mission alignment. We’re a small team doing work that matters. We’re looking for people who honestly want to help end HIV and are passionate about healthcare.

How We Work

  • Remote. The entire team is remote. We work across time zones with core collaboration hours of 9am–3pm Pacific.
  • Mission-driven pace. We work hard because the work matters. We don't stop when the ticket is done; we help each other, rally around production issues, and look for ways to improve both ourselves and the platform.
  • AI-forward. We actively use and explore AI coding and code review tools. We've invested in making this work within HIPAA constraints, so you'll have real, compliant access to tools like Claude Code and OpenAI Codex.
  • Autonomy with direction. You'll have significant independence in how you approach your work, collaborating closely with experienced teammates across engineering, product, and project management.

Our Hiring Process

  • Application review. We read applications ourselves; no AI resume screening. We're looking for evidence of real experience, not keyword matches.
  • Introductory call (30 min). A conversation with our Senior Engineering Manager. We'll talk about the role, the team, and your background. This is as much for you to evaluate us as the other way around. Come with questions.
  • Take-home project. We’ll provide you with a set of requirements, and ask you to create a Python/Django/DRF project and push it to a GitHub repo for us to review once completed.
  • Technical conversation (60 min). A deeper discussion with members of our engineering team about your experience, how you approach problems, and how you think about architecture and code quality. We'll talk through your take home project, real scenarios relevant to our stack, and the challenges we're solving. No gotcha questions, no whiteboard algorithms.
  • Live coding session (60 min). A practical, pair-programming-style session adding a feature to your take-home project. You're welcome to use the AI coding tools you'd use on the job — we want to see how you actually work, including how you use AI, when you don't, and how you evaluate what it produces. We'll also include a code review exercise where you review a pull request and walk us through your feedback.
  • Final conversation (30 min). A call with our VP of Engineering to talk about the mission, team culture, and your questions about Healthvana. If there are things that matter to you about where you work, how decisions get made, what the pace feels like, where the company is headed, this is the place to ask. We aim to have an offer decision within a few business days of the final conversation.

Benefits

  • Competitive salary — $150,000 - 200,000, based on experience
  • 401(k) with employer matching
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Generous health insurance coverage
  • Annual home office stipend

Requirements

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States. We are unable to offer visa sponsorship at this time.
  • Must be available to work weekdays during core business hours of 9am–3pm Pacific Time.
