Role Overview

The Software Engineer, Agents at Harvey is responsible for building systems that make our AI agents indispensable to legal professionals. Key responsibilities include:

• Partnering with customers and Product Managers to understand legal workflows.
• Designing practical evaluations to define what "excellent" means for legal workflows.
• Shipping agents that meet these standards and improve legal workflows.
• Optimizing agent performance through prompt engineering, model selection, tool design, skill writing, context window management, and eval harness development.
• Improving observability and instrumentation to profile agent behavior, identify bottlenecks, and drive optimization decisions.
• Staying current on new developments in agentic systems and bringing those learnings back to the products we build.

What You'll Do

To achieve these goals, you will:

• Work closely with customers and Product Managers to understand legal workflows.
• Create practical evaluations that capture what "excellent" means for legal workflows.
• Ship agents that meet these standards and improve legal workflows.
• Optimize agent performance through prompt engineering, model selection, tool design, skill writing, context window management, and eval harness development.
• Improve observability and instrumentation to profile agent behavior, identify bottlenecks, and drive optimization decisions.
• Stay current on new developments in agentic systems and bring those learnings back to the products we build.

What You Have

• Passion for building effective domain-specific agents.
• An iterative mindset: developing proof of concepts, making decisions quickly, and shipping v0s.
• Comfortable with using evaluations to drive quality.
• A humble and adaptable approach to code and frameworks.

Qualifications

• 5-8 years (post-BS/MS) of software engineering experience.
• Proficiency in Python and experience working with LLM APIs and agent frameworks.
• Experience with shipping user-facing products, either on the backend or full-stack.

Pay

$193,400 - $290,000 USD Depending on your location.
