EngineeringFull-time

nou Systems, Inc. (nSI) is now officially a 100% ESOP company! We value teamwork and collaboration, and this transition allows us to take that commitment to a new level. nSI empowers our customers by supplying products, services, and expertise with powerful, data-driven insights that transform defense systems and improve capabilities. We’re building systems that solve our nation's most challenging defense problems in an enjoyable, stimulating environment. We’re known for fielding revolutionary missile defense systems, pioneering step changes in RF seeker technology, introducing principled AI systems, and rapidly pioneering novel defense platforms, from space to the seabed.

We're looking for talented builders with high levels of curiosity and extremely strong grounding in fundamentals and engineering first principles. If you're hungry for harder problems and want to build products that actually get into users’ hands, we’ve got you covered. We are pleased to announce openings for Senior Software Developers (front end, back end, and full stack) who will join our Technical Solutions Division and JSTC2 Team in Huntsville, Alabama to build software that provides warfighting training exercise participants unparalleled access to information about the unfolding scenario. You’ll be part of a team that is not only modernizing the interface to the underlying warfighting simulations but also finding new and innovative ways of surfacing deep information about the scenario, providing end users the right information right when they need it.

Responsibilities

  • Develop Government Off-the-Shelf software currently in use in ongoing warfighting exercises, accelerating progress along a years-long product roadmap.
  • Serve as an integral part of a multidisciplinary software team combining a web-based front end, large-data-management back end, and on-prem LLM-powered data exploration.
  • Write code while leveraging newer agentic coding approaches and mentor junior developers through focused code reviews.
  • Collaborate with other talented developers, architects, QA, and integration/DevOps in an Agile/SAFe team environment.
  • Deliver high-quality software to end users on a 10-week cadence, eliciting end user needs and scoping work even in the absence of perfect information.
  • Participate in Scrum Agile ceremonies (standups, sprint reviews, Product Increment planning) and manage tickets, peer reviews, and backlogs.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field, or Bachelor’s in those fields plus 4 years of experience above the baseline required qualification. Experience may be substituted for a degree in certain circumstances.
  • 10+ years of full-time professional experience in software development, with 3+ years in technical leadership roles.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain an active Secret Security Clearance.
  • U.S. Citizen.

Qualifications

  • Expertise in software development as an individual contributor without agentic coding support.
  • Front end: Typescript (ES6+), Angular (or React with willingness to learn Angular), CSS (Bootstrap).
  • Back end: Go, Python, some C/C++.
  • Production code: modular, unit tested, supports integration and end-to-end testing, maintained in source control (Git + GitLab).
  • Experience with Scrum Agile software development and team-focused practices (ticket management, peer reviews, backlog management).

Skills

  • Mentor and lead technical contributors to act as a force multiplier.
  • Support software architecture development in collaboration with the Chief Architect.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, including justifying technical decisions with quantitative information.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies to intelligently adopt new libraries, languages, architectures, and tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with distributed simulation systems, especially Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) messaging.
  • Experience with cloud-ready microservice architecture, including MQTT communication protocol.
  • Comfortable developing in a containerized (Docker) Linux-based (Ubuntu) environment.
  • Experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Development (CI/CD) pipelines.
  • Front end: Experience with web-based geospatial mapping (Cesium).
  • Back end: Experience with databases (PostgreSQL) and optimization techniques (indexing, stored procedures, query tuning, data partitioning, normalization/denormalization, table optimization).
  • Experience with newer approaches to using LLMs as a natural language interface to a data store (beyond RAG).
  • Active Top Secret clearance.
