About the Department

The California Lottery is a multi-billion-dollar enterprise headquartered in Sacramento. It is one of the few state organizations that generates revenue without accepting taxpayer dollars from the state’s general fund. Our mission is to provide supplemental funding for California’s public schools and colleges. In fiscal year 2023-24, the Lottery generated sales of more than $9.2 billion, with approximately $2.2 billion earned for California public schools. Lottery products are sold at over 23,000 retail locations statewide, including independent neighborhood shops, convenience stores, liquor stores, and supermarkets. Offerings include an average of 52 Scratchers® games and several draw games, such as Powerball®, Mega Millions®, SuperLotto Plus®, Fantasy 5, and Hot Spot®.

About the Role

Under the general direction of the Information Technology Services Division (ITSD) Business Process Automation Services (BPAS), the Senior Software Developer & Administrator supports the California State Lottery’s BPAS Unit. This role involves planning, development, implementation, maintenance, and support of enterprise IT operations and software systems to meet critical business objectives. Responsibilities span Client Services, Software Engineering, IT Project Management, and System Engineering, with potential assignments in other domains as needed.

This position is headquartered in Sacramento and is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule. Employees must report to the assigned office as required, with travel expenses to and from the headquarters being the employee’s responsibility.

Responsibilities

• Plan, develop, implement, maintain, and support enterprise IT operations and software systems.
• Work across Client Services, Software Engineering, IT Project Management, and System Engineering domains.
• Collaborate with teams to meet critical business objectives for the Lottery’s BPAS Unit.
• Perform additional IT-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Current Information Technology Specialist II exam eligibility (or ability to obtain it).
• Ability to meet the Minimum Qualifications listed in the Classification Specification for Information Technology Specialist II.
• Clearance of a Background Investigation prior to hiring (required by the California State Lottery Act).
• No convictions of a felony or any gambling-related offense (per the California State Lottery Act).
• Residency in California for telework eligibility (per California Government Code Section 14200).

Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate experience and education related to the Minimum Qualifications for the Information Technology Specialist II classification. Desirable qualifications include:

• Proven ability to support enterprise IT operations and software systems.
• Experience in software development, IT project management, and system engineering.

Pay

$8,625.00 - $11,557.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of the alternate range, if applicable.

Effective July 1, 2025, specific bargaining units and excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction of 2% - 4.62% in exchange for Personal Leave hours each month.
