Senior Scientist (Small Molecule, Synthetics)
About the role
Join Amgen’s Drug Product Team (DPT) as a Senior Scientist specializing in small molecule synthetics. In this role, you will provide creative functional area strategies and execute Design of Experiments (DOE) during the development of pivotal and commercial-ready programs. You will apply deep expertise in organic chemistry to develop innovative, fast-paced approaches within cross-functional teams, interfacing with departments such as Drug Substance Technologies, Attribute Sciences, Quality Assurance, Regulatory Affairs, Supply Chain, Contract Manufacturing, Pharmacokinetics and Drug Metabolism, Clinical Development, and Biostatistics.
Responsibilities
- Design and execute experiments to support drug product development objectives.
- Summarize results in technical documents, regulatory filings, and presentations.
- Engage proactively with external industry groups (e.g., IQ Consortium) and academic partners (e.g., university consortia).
- Provide technical expertise related to the structure, reactivity, and physicochemical properties of materials (drug substance, excipients, etc.).
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Doctorate degree (PhD, PharmD, or MD) with relevant post-doc experience where applicable, or
- Master’s degree and 3 years of scientific experience, or
- Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of scientific experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or Pharmaceutical Sciences.
- Strong scientific background in organic molecules and their assemblies.
- Profound scientific acumen in organic chemistry, physical chemistry, solid-state chemistry, and physicochemical properties of small molecules.
- Industry experience in the pharmaceutical sector, particularly with oral solid dosage forms.
- Technical proficiency with characterization techniques (e.g., XRPD, DSC, TGA, SEM).
- Knowledge of the patent application process and legal frameworks governing patents.
- Demonstrated understanding of scientific principles related to solid dosage forms.
- Comprehensive knowledge of unit operations for producing oral solid dosage forms.
- Ability to design, conduct, and complete independent formulation research.
- Publication record demonstrating research dissemination.
- Proven track record of effective cross-functional team collaboration.
- Exceptional technical writing skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Proactive, curious, and innovative mindset with enthusiasm for applying digital solutions to scientific challenges.
